Red Maple: Red Maple
The Red Maple is known as one of the trendiest places in Baltimore serving Asian inspired tapas and exotic cocktails. The decor is a mix of retro modern and hip lounge. Happy Hour is every Wednesday Friday 5-7pm. Great people watching and meeting place with lots of young professionals.
Dress Code: Casual
The 13th Floor: High over Baltimore
The 13th floor, located in the Belvedere Hotel, is a small, funky, friendly nightspot that has some great live bands - jazz, blues, r&b - and an excellent view of the city. Happy hours on weekdays from 6-9pm. Also check out the Owl Bar, an elegant and airy space on the first floor of the hotel, which has better food.
Dress Code: No dress code, as far as I can tell. A mixture of people in coats and ties coming from work and informal student-types.
Roots Cafe: Roots Music Mecca
The Roots Cafe, is an informal music scene that comes to life every two weeks or so in the funky ancient hall of St. John's Church. Authentic roots music is presented by a great collection of local and regional bands. If you like blues, rock, country, jazz, zydeco, folk, cabaret, or alternative music set in a friendly atmosphere, then this is the place for you. There is room to dance and walk around or just sit and focus on the tunes. Tickets are cheap and they serve beer and wine out of ice coolers in the back. Great people and serious music. Check out their website to see when the next event is.
Dress Code: Wear what you want. No judgements about clothes.
The Brewer's Art: Raise the Dead
Upstairs is very nice. One might even consider it upscale in appearance.
Downstairs is, well, a basement with tables and a bar in it. It's dark, and it can be a bit of a trouble finding your way through when you've had a few too many.
I prefer the downstairs, of course.
They brew their own beer here, and its pretty good. The most popular is the resurection, which I've been known to have a few too many of. Be forewarned, most of their beers have a relatively high alcohol content (5-10%).
They also have great rosemary garlic fries.
Dress Code: Upstairs you might want to make a little bit of an effort (not much, because there's only so much of an effort one can make in Baltimore when one's not at the BSO), but downstairs is most definitely come as you are.
Central / Uptown: List of Local area Bands website
This website is a listing of local area Baltimore bands:
The photo below is one of my high school buds Ed Safely (AKA Ed Tree) playing lead guitar for Rita Cooledge's band.
The Brewer's Art.: The Brewer's Art.
This place sets the tone for posh grunge. It has high ceilings and windows as would be expected of this turn of the century former winter townhouse of an investment banker. Though the decor suggests fine dining, the feel just screams of beggars' banquet when you notice the furniture looks like it's been there since the turn of the century!
Dress Code: It has a very eclectic crowd. Theater goers can sit in black tie and gowns next to jean clad patrons that stopped in for happy hour.
Club Hippo: Club Hippo
Right around the corner from Central Station, another club/bar that mainly caters to the gay and lesbian community but anyone is welcome. Nice size dance floor.
Dress Code: Put your sparkles/sequins on + get ready to party!
SONAR LOUNGE: Dont miss
