Baltimore Zoo
Don't miss the penguins at the Baltimore Zoo! - Baltimore
Don't miss the penguins
at the Baltimore Zoo!

The Baltimore Zoo is a great place to visit, and the only reason I listed it as "off the beaten path" is because you will need to take some form of transportation to get there from the Downtown/Inner Harbor area (although it is only a few miles away from the downtown area!) If you wish to drive, don't fret...parking is free!

The Baltimore Zoo is opened every day, year round. Of course, a great day at the zoo depends on the weather, so you really need to plan accordingly. It really is no fun to walk around the zoo in the very cold winter months, but on that same note, the hot and humid summer days of Baltimore can lead to an equally disappointing visit.

Because our summers in Baltimore are often accompanied by very very humid days, many of the animals stay hidden in their nooks and crannies to avoid the blazing sun. However, because the zoo is opened each day, you can make a last minute decision on when to visit the zoo based on the weather.

The zoo opens every day at 10:00 a.m., and this is usually the most crowded time, as many schools, day care centers and youth groups visit at this time. I'd recommend visiting the park anytime after 12 noon, as most of these groups need to leave before school hours end. The park closes weekdays at 4:30, and I have found the hours between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to be the least crowded. Just remember, the gates close 1 hour prior to closing time. (Closing time on the weekend is 6 p.m.).

The Baltimore Zoo boasts several distinct sections....with everything from African animals to Polar Bears and penguins. Don't forget to visit the Reptile House! Food stands can be found throughout the zoo, as well as shaded areas and picnic tables to take a break from all that walking! A free tram that takes weary visitors from the African village to the main entrance is also available!

The Baltimore Zoo is one of the many attractions in Baltimore that appeals to the young as well as the young at heart. Be sure to visit the zoo on your next visit to Baltimore!

First, and Busiest Trauma Center in the US
The R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center was the first civilian institution in the United States to use helicopters to transport injured patients from an accident scene.

Today there are 3000 patients flown in by helicopter each year, another 3000 arrive by ambulance, making it the busiest trauma center in the world.

The R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center was recently featured in USA Today newspaper and Popular Science magazine (October 2003).

    Southern Sentinel
This is the smoke stack that greets you when you come into Baltimore from the south on the BW Parkway (I-295).

On the south side of the stack it says BALTIMORE and this picture is the north side.

It is a waste to energy plant (AKA a Large Municipal Waste Combustors or MWC) with a Multicomponent Infrared Gas Analyzer in the stack to analyze the exhaust.

The Baltimore Resco plant has a total capacity of 2,250 TPD (tons per day), consisting of three 750 TPD units each with emissions controlled by an electrostatic precipitator.

    A Frontyard Tree
What a beautiful tree that is just starting to show off its leaves for the year. You need at least a five acre front yard (like this one) to show this beauty. To bad, the house is set way back and cannot see this tree. It's located just off North Charles Street.

    Baltimore Trust Company Building
I was drawn to the Baltimore Trust Company Building by the art deco exterior topped with a green copper patina and gold leaf roof that I could see towering over the city and thought I would pop in to have a look. The interior of this building was the coolest I saw in Baltimore, intricate mosaic floors, murals displaying Baltimore's history, impressive teller windows designed to make you feel secure enough to put your money in the bank. Ironically, it was built in 1929, right before the stock market crash and Great Depression in the US. The Baltimore Trust Company went belly up two years after moving in and the building sat empty for nearly a decade.

The building has changed hands a few times since, it's currently known as the Bank of America Building but it was also the Nationsbank Building, the Maryland Bank & Trust and oddly the O'Sullivan Rubber Company Building.

If you want to read more about this building, here's an interesting article I found.

Located at 10 Light Street, between Baltimore and Redwood

    NSA's National Cryptologic Museum
The museum just opened in 1993 and houses a wide variety of cryptographic gear used to keep the government's communications secure. 50,000 people visit the museum each year. Admission is free.

    Nearby is Ft Meade.

Located near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Rt 32 south of Baltimore.

    Bad Boys
When I was in San Antonio, I had to make fun of the cops for huddling up in huge groups of 15-20 and, rather than fighting terrorists and murderers, just pulling over people not wearing seatbelts and those who want to drink in public.

In Baltimore, the cops only travel in twos, but they look ridiculously stupid in their little Mini Cooper (mini copper?) look-a-like cars.

    Andrews Air Force Base
Andrews is a massive Air Force Base with some 20,000 people stationed here, perhaps it is the second largest USAF base in the world behind Balad Air Base in Iraq? They have a wide variety of aircraft including C-20s, C-21, C-32A, C-37A/B , C-38, C-40B/C, C-130 Hercules, EA-6B Prowler, F-16 Fighting Falcon, KC-135R Stratotanker, UC-12 Huron, UC-35, UH-1N, VC-25A, and most unique is the VC-25A more famously known as Air Force One. Andrews is also home to the Air Force District of Washington as well as its 316th Wing and 89th Wing.

Andrews is located on the Beltway east of Washington, DC.

    Baltimore & Ohio RR building
This was a another building that I was drawn to as I was walking the streets of Baltimore, the Beaux Arts style B&O Building, built as the headquarters of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, a statue of Mercury and another statue cradling a locomotive beckoning me inside. The marble lobby was just as grand as I thought it would be, if you find yourself on Charles St., be sure to stop by for a look.

The 13 story B&O Building opened in 1906, designed by Parker & Thomas in the shape of an H, replacing the former office building that had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1904.

Located at 2 N. Charles at Baltimore St.
