Cafe Hon: Can't miss the 50' flamingo

by staindesign Written Aug 11, 2013

It would be impossible to miss Cafe Hon. At 50' Pink flamingo is attached to the front of the building. I saw Cafe Hon on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares about a year ago, so when we knew we were coming to Baltimore I had to visit. Apparently, the owner was in a little disagreement with the local radio dj's bc they were talking bad about the restaurant. And ppl were calling into discuss their terrible experiences with Cafe Hon. It really wasn't too much about the food but complaints abt the owner. Long story short, Gorden Ramsey insisted she remove the flamingo, she refused but follow most of his recommendations. I agree the flamingo is sort of a staple to the "Hon" theme of the neighborhood. They even have their own entry in Wikipedia. :)

Overall, Cafe Hon was good. It had good food and ambience.

Cafe Hon: Cafe Hon : Overrated

by gardengnome Written Jan 17, 2006

The Cafe Hon sits on "The Avenue" in Hampden -- one of Baltimore's little neighborhoods. Hamden is enjoying a period of blue-collar-chic, with housing prices rising and new shops and restarants opening all the time. The thrift and dollar stores closed recently to make way for more antique shops. . .

Cafe Hon has been around as long as I've known (ten years) and has consistently served meals that are higher priced than their taste or value merit. The service isn't consistent - I've found that usually the wait staff tends to forget your special request (add onions to the grilled cheese, for example) or remember too late to make a difference -- like a beverage finally getting served at the end of dessert.

Still, wait staff are usually friendly and the menu -- though short -- offers standards from grilled cheese to meatloaf and apple pie.

Great basic food, with an eclectic "John Waters" ambiance. I tried the crabcake the last time I was there, it certainly hit the spot!

"hon" is a Baltimore slang.... we say it to most everyone in conversation.
