When my oldest daughter was a baby, we would go places with animals because they engaged her attention. My mother and I took her to the zoo in Baltimore when she was about 18 months old.
I'm sure the zoo is much more modern now as these photos were taken 48 years ago in the winter of 1962-63. I don't remember there being much of an admission charge. Now it seems a bit more pricey

This small zoo has a fairly interesting collection of animals but the admission charge ($11) is way out of proportion to its small collection. None the less if your a zoo fan this is a small but nice visit.

When we were toddlers, my mom and grandmother used to take us here.
So we've come with our children and their friends. One of the new exhibits is the Polar Bear Watch, the Zoo's new state-of-the-art exhibit about life on the edge of the Arctic. You can watch the polar bears cavort in the water.
But there is more to do than just look at the animals and have the animals look at you - such as a climbing wall (photo 2). And my son has adopted animals at the zoo (a fund raising deal)

Baltimore has a nice, relatively uncrowded zoo. Unfortunately, in recent years the zoo has struggled for survival (probably due to its uncrowdedness). In fact, it would have closed two yearsago had it not been saved by a massive charity campaign that included a local deejay spending November nights in a cage (Way to go Amelia from 98 Rock!). The Zoo sits in Druid Hill Park and is well-laid-out with spacious animal exhibits. Unlike the nearby National Zoo in Washington D.C., it has cute penguins, mature rhinos and massive polar bears. Also, unlike the National Zoo, it costs money to enter ($15 per adult). This high cost of entry compared with the free zoo just down I-95 may also be a contributing factor to the zoo's financial difficulties.
Unless the zoo, closes, this won't bother you much. The influx of charity money means the grounds are well-appointed and some new exhibits are being developed. And if you go on a weekday while school is in session, you may have the place to yourself!

Just the right size for spending a day or just a few hours, the Baltimore Zoo is easy to access from 83 N/S. The Zoo is spread over and up and down some hills, so wear your sneakers and bring your camera. The exhibits range from MD animals to a petting zoo, to the African area which has the most animals, and is a kid-pleaser.
Polar bears and prarie dogs are located near the snack shop, so you can munch while watching the bears swim or the dogs pop in and out of their burrows.
Prices are high in the shops, so you might want to bring your own snacks and avoid the souvenir shop. Don't forget to visit the glass arboretum on your way in/out, as it's open to the public and boasts some wonderful plants -- recently renovated.
