Gaithersburg Things to Do

  • Stained Glass Windows

I was passing by a church I have passed by a thousand times. I had promised myself that one day I would stop and take a look inside, from the outside it looks like it had great stained glass windows.Today I did.Church staff was very very nice and were delighted to show me the church. I was surprised that this church has been around over a hundred...

  • Seneca Creek State Park

Up in an area of Montgomery County where there used to be mills and quarries,,,Seneca Creek state park is a nice little oasis away from the hustle and bustle. The park centers on man-made Clopper Lake. In summer this is a fun place to go kayaking. Rentals are available and quite cheap. Make sure to wear protection from the sun because before you...

  • County Agricultural Fair

held at the Montgomery County fairgrounds (this years dates are Aug 10-18) There's a little of everything. They do have of all the animals and you can talk to the people and learn a great deal about a fast disappearing lifestyle (farming). the 4-H Club co-sponsors it I learned something, for example I had never in my life thought there were so many...

Gaithersburg Restaurants

  • Uncle Julio's Mexican

I was not terribly impressed with this restaurant... We got the outdoor seating, which was lovely and lively, but that was about the only positive thing about our visit. Our waitress was surly from the minute we sat down. The food arrived quickly, but was rather bland. The salsa that came with our chips was the tastiest part of our meal. Overall, I...

  • Not as good as it used to be

**note**- I lived in Thailand for 3 years when i was younger, so I am often much more critical of Thai restaurants than others might be. I love the food and am always happy when I can find a place that is reasonably authentic. had gone to this restaurants many times over the years. It recently changed owners (and names, it used to be Old Siam,) the...

  • A bit different for a Vietnamese...

Right across the street from Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg is a small(ish) restaurant that I always enjoy going back to. Many of the Vietnamese pho restaurants in this area are usually pretty simple affairs, little in the way of decor and the service is often rushed. Pho and Grill opened a few years ago and I could tell from the first time I came...

  • Very nice Moroccan restaurant in...

This restaurant has been in Kentlands for a while, so finally a friend and I decided to stop by and try it out one evening. We came in and were seated promptly, noticing a large number of reserved tables. The ambience is nice, it has the Moroccan tilework and some nice pieces of decoration, just enough to be eye catching but thankfully not so much...

  • Crepes a go-go

This is a small restaurant/cafe in Kentlands, a fairly new part of Gaithersburg that was developed about 10 years ago, one of the better applications of the old town concept that I have seen. By and large it is a fairly upscale neighborhood with lots of shopping and restaurants. The Crepes a go-go serves only crepes, so if you are really hungry it...

  • Thai delicacy

The restaurant is located in the Rio promenade and has a nice view of the man made lake right next to the property. It has an interesting interior to it, feels like you in the middle of a deep blue sea. They have indoor waterfalls and varied colors painted on the walls and ceilings. It gets busy during the weekends and book in advance if you have a...

  • Italian food

This restaurant is a bit off the beaten track. Muncaster Mill is about halfway between Silver Spring and Gaithersburg. The restaurant itself is somewhat small, across the parking lot from Mickey D's. Ive been there several times, closer to 6 pm it is rather crowded and it might be difficult to get a good table.Service is good. They set out some...

  • Superb Szechuan food

This used to be Fu Shing, i guess its new ownership. This is located literally right next to the Gaithersburg Fairgrounds, right behind the Gaithersburg Square Shopping Center. Its not well marked but not terribly hard to find. What you notice about this restaurant is how the overwhelming majority of customers are Chinese. It seems this attracts a...

  • Great new Mexican Spanish restaurant

When a friend suggested a new mexican restaurant I was less than excited honestly. Most mexican restaurants have become so common and so bland in the last few years. In any case,Alicia's was a breath of fresh air. it is located in a small mall along Frederick Road in what used to be a bar. You walk in, the place is nice and clean and well lit....

Gaithersburg is served by THREE major airports: Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), Reagan National (DCA), and Dulles (IAD). All about about the same distance: a little less than an hour by freeway or major road. All are accessible by public transportation, although Reagan National is the easiest since it is served by Metro. Buses run between...

Gaithersburg Shopping

I have several friends who wear the cutest accessories, and whenever I would ask them where they got it (necklace, earrings, hat, shoes...), a lot of times, they would reply "Charming Charlie!" I was quite excited to finally find a Charming Charlie, within walking distance of our hotel. OMGoodness! It is a little overwhelming to walk in as there is a TON of jewelry on display. It is organized by color, which makes it easier, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Some of the jewelry is trendy, some classic - you will find what you are looking for here. I wish there was a location closer to my house - this would be a great place to do all of my holiday shopping (for the ladies, anyway!)

What to pay: I bought a necklace & earring set for $10. They have necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, scarves, hats, shoes, handbags... All very reasonably priced.

  • Local Newspaper

Though we have several local newspapers, the most useful one is the Gazette, which has editions for each of the cities in the neighborhood. It is more useful for activities and a good classified section. Good job ads for local companies, places for rent etc.their website can be quite useful

It's polite to dance.

Gaithersburg Off The Beaten Path

Though Gaithersburg is considered a city, it wasn't long ago that much of this was farmland. To see wildlife here is common. For example, a family of deer comes to graze on the ballfield not far from my house every autumn-a mother and a two kids usually. There are rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks. You don't hear of snakes very often.

This set of photos happened almost by accident. I was going to visit a friend when i saw these two little babies. They seemed oblivious to me, so i ran down the street back to my house as fast as i could and grabbed a camera. I brought them some bread and some goodies they could munch on. They were sweet enough to let me get real close to them and take all the pictures I wanted.

Favorite thing: Usually the Washington DC area is not one associates with any sort of natural disasters. I remember coming home from walking the dog very early in the morning. As soon as we got home and were relaxing it sounded like a train was passing right by the house. Of course, we don't have train tracks anywhere near the house. I thought to myself, nah,,,there aren't any earthquakes here.

Sure enough, when i got to work they announced that a 3.6 earthquake had occurred, the strongest one in Maryland. There was no real damage or any injuries that I'm aware of, just a lot of people wondering what that was.

And I thought that when I left California I was done with earthquakes:)
