The Crab Claw Restaurant: Certainly not crap food

by challenger Updated Jan 20, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Unless you’re a dedicated vegetarian or got hang ups over eating stuff with your hands that came out of the sea, there is no way you can visit the Chesapeake Bay area and not try some of their famous crab. And what better place than St Michaels’ Crab Claw Restaurant? Try sitting in the outside area that offers views on the harbour that’ll make you weep some sentimental manly tears. There is a lot on offer on the menu, but if you only go once stick to the basics and order a dozen or so crabs. Forget what your mother told you: Sometimes you can play with your food. Eating the crabs is a messy, but fully rewarding affair once you have figured out how to open those damn buggers.

Unfortunately I got no photos of my attempts as the batteries of my camera had just given up on me when we were seated. As an alternative here’s a pic from one of the museum items on display at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Bring cash as they don't accept credit cards! An ATM is just around the corner from the restaurant.

The Crab Claw: Enjoy Delicious Maryland Steamed Crabs!

The Crab Claw from the Back

Have you ever had Blue Crab? Being from New England, this might sound crazy, but I hate Lobster and LOVE Crab!! And The Crab Claw in St. Michaels is one of the best places to go.

Favorite Dish: Backfin Crab Salad was delicious, but the Steamed Crabs are a must here also! And with that you've got to have some "hush puppies!"

You can sit outside on the dock area. As you look over the Chesapeake you also can watch boats of various sizes coming in to dock.

Favorite Dish: Crab cakes. There are full of lump crab and I have lived in Maryland all my life and this is the best Maryland Crab cake I have every had!

Crab Claw Restaurant: St. Michaels Best Known Restaurant

    by littlesam1 Written Aug 23, 2008
    Crab Clae Restaurant

The Crab Claw is St. Michaels best know restaurant. Its location near the lighthouse and waterfront make it a idea place to stop for lunch or dinner. However be prepared to pay a little more than you might expect. I found the restaurant to be a bit on the pricey side. I had dinner here with three friends. We had seafood and salads, a pitcher of beer and dessert. Our total bill was $237.00. We had not planned to spend over $50.00 a piece for lunch. The portions were not large but the food was very good. I recommend the stuffed rock fish but only if you have your check book handy for payment.

St. Michael's Seafood and Crab House: An alternative to the Crab Claw

    by littlesam1 Updated Aug 23, 2008

I can not relate a lot about this restaurant as I did not eat here. As I mentioned in the previous tip I ate at the Crab Claw. There are several other restaurants along the waterfront in St. Michaels which gives a choice of places to dine. If I return I will probably try the St. Michaels Seafood and Steak House. They have water front out door dining. Crabs, fish and steaks are on their menu. I did not check the prices but would imagine they are probalby similiar to the Crab Claw. St. Michaels is a little on the pricey side for a small tourist area.

A side not to VTers. The red mustang in the parking lot pictured here was really beautiful. With its convertible top rolled down we saw that the keys were left in the iginiation and there was an envelope with airline tickets laying in the front seat. Perhaps a VTer visiting the area?

  • The Crab Claw: Eat elsewhere!

by poeope Written Aug 14, 2007

A huge disappointment. The crab cakes were the most boring and had more filler than any I have ever had in Maryland. And at $21 for two, they were horrifically overpriced for what they were.

We did not have the steamed crabs, but nothing that we did have was fresh. Surprisingly, in an area surrounded by farms and fresh produce, virtually everything was prepackaged institutional food - Kraft tartar sauce packets, canned green beans, packaged vegetables, canned apple sauce.

We had a friendly waitress who informed us at the end of the meal that the Crab Claw doesn't accept credit cards. That isn't posted clearly as you enter, though.

The restaurant seems more interested in making money than in serving good food.

    Favorite Dish: The beer.

Crab Claw: THE place for crabs!!!!!!

by Kentbein Written Sep 2, 2004
    The Crab Claw, St. Michael's

This is the single greatest place on the planet for crabs. There is no other seafood restaurant that comes close to matching the Crab Claw for eating Maryland crabs. The outdoor tables have the most wonderful view of the harbor, with peaceful sailboats slidding into the slip right there before you as you crack open the world's best crabs. Don't miss this superb experience if you're visiting the Eastern Shore.

    Favorite Dish: CRABS.

    Crab Claw Restaurant

Located adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the Crab Claw is an exellent seafood restaurant. Of course, the main feature is crab. I had a huge seafood platter featuring local crab. Great maritime atmosphere here.

Pretty good food at this little cafe along Main Street. Don't search too hard for this place, there are many others like it along the street.
