Bowen's Inn: Careless Cigarette - Historic Inn Gone

  • Entrance and outside deck - Solomons Island
    Entrance and outside deck

In March 2006, someone discarded a cigarette which lit the dry leaves under the boardwalk leading to the Inn and restaurant. The fire, whipped by high winds, burned Bowen's Inn and the Lighthouse Restaurant next door completely to the ground. So the review below is for historic interest only.

    ____________________________________

I finally got Bob to go here for Thursday All You Can Eat Taco Night. From the street side it is kind of hidden. The directions say "impossible to miss", but I disagree - it is quite possible to miss it. I had to be centered on finding it or I would have missed it.

It is both a place to stay and a place to eat.

We had the All-You-Can-Eat Tacos $5.00 each. Bob ate nine - I only ate 6. With iced tea for each of us and a chocolate silk pie for me plus a tip for the waitress that was $18.00 for the two of us for dinner - one of the cheapest dinners we've had in a long time. I'm sure this will become one of our favorite places.

From a story about local ghosts: (see URL below)

Bowen's Inn has been rumored to be haunted for many years now. Robert Dowell, who is employed in the bar attached to the Inn, witnessed the ghost at Christmastime last year.

Dowell was taking some boxes up to the third floor of the Inn when he saw her. "She was about six feet tall and she was wearing an old fashioned black dress with a high lace collar," Dowell described. "She just stood at the top of the landing, and once I started running away, I looked back and she started off back down the hall."

Downstairs, Dowell began telling the owner of the Inn, Tony Costantino, what had just happened. "I knew he was scared out of his mind," Costatino remembered, "Robert's part Indian and he was white as a sheet." To this day, Dowell has not returned to the third floor of the Inn.

Open Wed. 4PM. Thurs. through Sunday 11:00AM. 12 room Hotel, Restaurant & Lounge, centrally located in Solomons Island. Newly renovated. Large parties welcome. Est. 1918.

The Secrets of Solomons web page says: "Best Crab Cakes in town! ALL YOU CAN EAT $5.00 Spaghetti (Tuesday); Fried Chicken (Wednesday); Taco's (Thursday). DJ on Friday; band on Saturday" They have an all you can eat seafood dinner on Friday for $18.95 which includes snow crab.

Apparently in addition to the live music, they also have billards, and I'm sure it has a bar, and an outdoor deck.

    Entertainment Schedule
Saturday, September 27, 2003 Poor Boy Zeus

Come out and show PBZ some love! We're gonna rock you like we always do with great sounds on the water! Show starts at 9:30 p.m

Vincenzo's At Calvert Marina: They Have Half Portions
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Our friends came on their boat and dinghied over here to eat with us. Unfortunately, it was on a Monday, and Vincenzo's is closed on Monday. We went back here last week for dinner. They had live music and they asked us whether we would like to be close to the music or far away. We picked far away, but it was still a bit loud (it was a lady with an electric keyboard who sang). She may have been good, but I couldn't hear her sing over the instrument.

This is a nice restaurant with napkins and tablecloths and an extensive wine list (which we did not partake of). They had a nice option of half size entrees. There was some confusion when we ordered dessert. The waiters didn't seem to know exactly what kinds of gelato and sorbet they had.

I had the pear salad (spring mix, pears, provalone and parrigiano shaving) as a starter which was $7 on the take home menu, but I was charged $8.00 so maybe they raised the price after the menu was printed. It was very good. Then I had a half portion of Chesapeake Gnocchi with jumbo lump crab in cream, which was excellent ($11.00).

Bob had the Vencenzo's Ravioli with naturally sweet carrot sauce (it looked very orange) - half portion which they also charged $11.00 for. He had lemon sorbet for dessert ($6.00) which looked very good. I should have had that, but I had the chocolate almond gelato which I didn't really care for. They only had one flavor of gelato, which I was initially told was chocolate. I'm not that fond of almond in my chocolate.

There is a column in the local paper called "Around Town" and this week, they reviewed this restaurant. It sounded good so we tried it.

The reviewer went for lunch. She got
    crab melt sandwich $12.99
    pulled pork bbq sandwich $7.49
jalapeno poppers with rasberry sauce $5.99
And two scoops of ice cream for $2.85
[Note - she took most of it home to her husband.]

    She also mentioned
smoked wings $5.99 (either Old Bay or original)
    sweet potato stix $4.99
    Gold coast chicken salad $9.99
    taco salad $9.99
Jethro burger (pork bbq between two quarter pound cheeseburgers) $9.99
    bourbon glazed Angus stead $18.99

    Open 11-8 Sunday to Thursday
    11-9 Friday
8 am to 9 pm Saturday

    They also will do carry-out.

I had one of the specials - and 8 oz filet which was very thick for $15.99. This came with mashed potatoes and a tossed salad. Then I had another special for desert - the fried cheesecake for $5.99. This actually had a crust that was hot on the outside of the cool cheesecake, and had strawberry jam on top.

Bob had the half rack of ribs with two sides (he picked apple sauce and cole slaw). For a picture of his half rack, click on additional photos.

We both drank pink lemonade (free refills for $1.99).

Other specials on the board (additional photo) were

The Naughty Gull: Near the Holiday Inn and Spring Cove Marina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This was our normal weekly outing. We haven't been here to eat in a couple of years. The Naughty Gull is right by the marina, looks out on the docks. The place is tastefully decorated.

Naughty Gull has a Happy Hour Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m., when they offer $1.25 drafts, $2.00 rail drinks and $2.50 wines, accompanied by appetizers

    Sunday Brunch: 9:00 am. - 1:30p.m.
    $ 1. 00 Bloody Marys
    $2.50 Mimosas
    $ 1. 5O Champagne
    with purchase of Brunch

The bar and smoking tables are separated from the non-smoking area by big table level to ceiling windows. The problem with this is noise. The narrow non-smoking area flanked on the two long sides by windows is really echoy, and even though there's no music or TV noise it is almost impossible to have a conversation without shouthing.

The waitress brought us cheese and crackers, and the iced tea that we ordered ($1.25). We each had one of the specials. Bob had the lump crab meat salad for $12.99, and I had the stuffed rockfish at $16.99. Mine came with two sides - I had some very good parmesan zucchini, and an ordinary salad with blue cheese dressing which had a lot of big chuncks of blue cheese in it. I also had a chocolate desert. It was supposed to be a chocolate chess cheesecake - it was very good, but it didn't taste like cheese. It was $4.00.

Other of the specials were a 10 oz. lobster tail with a 6 oz. steak for $31.99, and a cajan pasta dish with scallops, crab and lobster for $19.95.

The next time we went, I had the pasta with lump crab meat and butter sauce and garlic bread which was excellent. When we went at the end of October 2006, we both had the mahi mahi special for $14.95. It was just OK. The chocolate cheesecake was very good.

    Regular Entrees include

    From the land ...
    Filet Mignon, 8 oz
New York Strip Steak, 12 oz
    Chicken Breasts (2)
Choice of BBQ. season saft or lemon peppered

    From the sea
Seafood Platter (deep fried or broiled)
Shrimp, scallops, flounder and crab cake
Crab Cake Platter (deep fried or broiled)
Two crab cakes, made with our special blend of crab and spices
Stuffed Shrimp (deep fried or broiled)
Four shrimp stuffed with backfin crab meat
    Crab Norfolk
Jumbo lump crab broiled in garlic butter
    Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna
    Fried Shrimp

    All entrees served with choice of two side dishes;
Salad, vegetable of the day, cole slaw, applesauce,
Red potatoes, baked potato, french fries
    Rolls upon request

    PASTA DISHES
served with garlic bread and salad Marinara or Butter, Wine & Garlic
(with green peppers, onions, tomatoes) or
Cajun (with green peppers, onions, tomatoes)
    Served with:

  • New Solomon's Pier from the parking lot - Solomons Island
    New Solomon's Pier from the

It was time for our once a week dinner out, and I had a coupon for Solomon's Pier - 1/2 off an entree when you buy an entree. My husband complained that we hadn't liked it before, but I wanted to go anyway. When our daughter got married in 1987, this was one of the favorite restaurants of the wedding party (all fishing buddies from FL).

The restaurant wasn't crowded, and we did have a good dinner with attentive service. My husband admitted afterwards that it was good. We ate at a table by the window and watched the sun set over the Patuxent.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner - no reservations. I think they also do takeout. There is a deck where you can eat outdoors in good weather (it was too cold in March). Second photo

Note 9/2003: The hurricane destroyed the gazebo roof (I saw a photo in the paper). The tide was about 6 or 7 feet above normal after the hurricane.

Note: 7/2004: The restaurant is back in business but we haven't been since the hurricane.

Note: 9/2006: We went back for another meal here. They had us on high stools by the window. There was a big group of people on the deck - some kind of reunion. They restaurant is now decorated with carved birds - seagulls and pelicans (photo 3) carved by Lance Lichtensteiger, and they are for sale.

The soup of the day was shrimp bisque, which I had. It was very good but there were some little bits of exoskeleton that I had to pick out or swallow. We both had chicken stuffed with crab meat over wild rice. The chicken was a little blackened (whether on purpose or not I can't say). There was a tasty gravy or sauce over it. There were no rolls, bread or other extras like salad. We both had plenty of room for desert - I had white chocolate and raspberry cheese cake and Bob had carrot cake. Service was extremely attentive.

When we went in Sept 2006, I had the baked mahi mahi with spicy tomato and garlic sauce special for $14.00 with two sides, and Bob had fish and chips for $16.00. Portions were small to medium. Service was uneven.

  • I thought that Roy Rogers had been bought out by another chain, but surprisingly, there are still some of them around. We went over there for a quick lunch in the middle of our museum visiting. The Captain's Table: Waterfront Dining north of the Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We've been here a couple of times and went again tonight. They do have main dishes (mostly lobster or surf and turf) for over $25, but there are a lot of cheaper ones too. Casual dining, but reservations are suggested and may be necessary in the summer.

When we went just before Columbus Day 2003, the inside of the restaurant was filled with kids on some kind of school trip. The restaurant staff person said they were from Delaware - there were two big tour buses in the parking lot, and there was a buffet with several dishes inside the restaurant.

We sat outside because that was the only table available, but the weather was really nice, and we could see the boats in the harbor, and later an orange moon rose opposite our table. (see photo inset)

I had the New England clam chowder, catch of the day (rockfish in this case) stuffed with crabmeat, mashed potatoes without gravy, green beans and carrots almondine, a rye roll and 2 pieces of cornbread, and peach cobbler with ice cream. Bob had liver and onions, mashed potatoes without gravy, cole slaw and rolls. My main dish listed for $14.99..

10/9/2003- This time I had the protein special, which was rockfish, chicken and steak each of these were good, but they had some sad carrots and peas with it. Bob had the single crab cake which came with fries and cole slaw for $10.99. I also had Key Lime pie. The bill without the tip was $38.00

DiGiovanni's Dock of the Bay: Italian Seafood on the Waterfront
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We got a coupon for this restaurant $29.95 for dinner for two M-Th 5:30-6:30. So for our weekly dining out, we went here. The restaurant is back off the street.

The restaurant is very attractive with a good view of Moll's Leg (the island in the middle of Back Creek). It was rainy and too cold to sit on the deck, but we had a nice window table.

The special dinner included either a free glass of wine or a dessert, soup or salad and an entre. General entrees were from $14 to $25.

We drank water, which was refilled as often as needed. Bob had the Caesar salad and I had the soup, which was a tomato orange. It was pured fresh tomatos (with seeds) sprinkled with tiny thin shavings of somewhat bitter orange peel.

For the main course I almost picked salmon on braised spinach, but we had salmon last night. So I got chicken parmesan on linquini. the chicken was tender enough to cut it with a fork. Bob had lasagna. For dessert we had 'forest berry sorbet' which was very good - it was a maroon-red sorbet which had blueberries and some red and some black berries in it.

Lighthouse Inn: Burned to the Ground
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This restaurant is on a narrow part of the island, and WAS visible both from the Patuxent and from Back Creek. You could see right through the top of it to the other side. In addition to the notable architecture, the bar is in the shape of a skipjack. The one-third scale skipjack bar was designed and built by local master craftsman and carver, "Pepper" Langley

THAT WAS THEN. But this restaurant and the one next to it and two boats at the docks burned completely to the ground yesterday (March 16, 2006). So it is no more.

    They advertised:
    Surf and Turf Buffet
    Every Tuesday and Thursday
    $25.95 per person
Featuring: crab legs, steamed shrimp, baked "catch" of the day, carved
meat, seafood soup, salad bar and more!

We went over to Solomons again for our weekly dinner out this evening and as usual when we could sit on the deck.... it rained.

They told us that if we sat on the deck we didn't need reservations. Apparently if you go Friday night, you need reservations to eat inside.

When we arrived, the parking lot was half empty, but by the time we left about 7:15 p.m. it was chock full.

The outside menu allowed you a full range of drinks, but not all the food on their online menu is available outside.

    We had a choice of

Two of Southern Maryland's best crab cakes available pan sauteed or broiled. $24.95

Or the fried Mariner's Platter Fantail shrimp, sea scallops, crab cake and fresh fish. $26.95

Or catch of the day (Broiled or baked Rockfish was one of the options) $19.95 or Fried Shrimp.

All entrees are served with two sides -vegetable and potato du jour or rice.

There were also appetizers such as buffalo wings, fried cheese sticks, fried calamari etc, and salads (garden, Thai chicken, Caesar), and sandwiches with one side.

I briefly considered a rib eye sandwich (about $9) and an appetizer or salad, but figured that it would be less expensive if I went for the cheapest entree which was the Rockfish.

Bob had an appetizer (1/2 lb. steamed shrimp) and a garden salad. We drank iced tea. The food was very good, but I'm still hungry. The total bill with tip was $48.00 even though we had some of the cheapest things on the menu.

The deserts sounded excellent and the one I had was very good (Carmel sundae with carmel ice cream and pecans). The others were turtle cheese cake, key lime pie, choclate chip pie, and apple pie a la mode with carmel sauce.

Solomon's Pier/Stoney's Seafood House: Best Crab Cakes!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The outside deck has plenty of tables and a bar. The inside is a large two story restaurant. We sat on the deck and watched the sunset over the water. Even though it was busy, the service was very good. And the crab cakes (voted the best by the Washington Post) were delicious! A great place to spend a night eating/drinking. Total bill for 2 with tip (no alcohol) was less than $50.
