Deep Creek Lake is the largest man-made reservoir in the state of Maryland. It was created in 1923 when the Pennsylvania Electric Company erected a dam on a branch of the Youghiogheny River to create hydroelectic power. In 2000, the state purchased the lake.Nowadays, Deep Creek Lake is one of the most popular resort areas in Maryland. Thousands of people spend their summer vacations at the lake pursuing various outdoor activities. Wisp Mountain Resort, a 132-acre (53-hectare) ski resort also attracts visitors during the winter.Although the mountainous, tree-covered area surrounding the lake is beautiful, I consider the lake and its surroundings to be a tourist trap simply because there are too many people. Not a tourist trap at all, but rather something interesting to see; the Paw Paw tunnel is a portion of the C&O Canal that travels over 5,000 feet through a mountain cut.You can walk through along the towpath. It gets very dark in the center, we 'felt' our way through the darkest portion. It was fun ;-)
