Westminster Things to Do

  • Class Graduation Stone

This stone is really neat because on each side is dedicated to the graduating classes of 1883-1886. It must had a sundial or some statue that was located on it, but now it is gone sadley. Still a neat memorial to those first students of the college.

  • Elderdice Hall 1920

Built in 1920 as a separate school to prepare ministers for the Methodist Protestant Church. It housed the seminary chapel, library, classrooms, offices, and dormitory rooms for the students on the upper two floors. The seminary was moved to DC, so the building was purchased by the college in the 1950's and it was turned into adminstration...

  • Western Maryland College Alumni Hall...

Built in 1896 to serve not just the college, but the community. Many social events have been held here such as dances, festivals, concerts, movies, plays, theatre and Sunday services. The exterior is very grand.

  • Ward Memorial Arch 1898

Named in honor for the first President of the college, James T. Ward. Ward Memorial Arch was built in 1898 after his death in tribute to him by former students and his niece. • Carroll Hall 1873

This was the first building my sister took me too. She knew I would love beauty of the building and she was right. Built in 1873 by Westminters businessmen, John L. Reinsnider as a private residence just across from the college. Mr. Reinsnider was a trustee of the college and lived here till 1922. It was purchase by the college and served as a Inn...

  • Keep driving on by...

I had not been to O'Lourdan's Irish Pub in several months and returned this past weekend to find them in a sorry state. The food was tasteless and bland (had a spicy appetizer, the Jameson's Steak tips, and it needed some spice...omg). The atmosphere used to have a real flair for the Celtic and those proud of Irish heritage. Again, not the same...

  • Down home eating

Cheap food served among the good old boys of Curl Canny, Merlin (or Carroll County, Maryland to non-natives). Anything made with apples is a good bet (they are connected with their own orchard) and the ice cream is great (although many prefer Hoffman's across town). Fried chicken livers, followed by apple pie a la mode.

Love that chicken from Popeye's? Eat it someplace else. The nearly toothless folks that run this franchise have a hard time with the concept of fast service or having side dishes available (unless you want a side of chicken with your chicken). Pressed for time? The Burger King across the street is a better bet. Want tasty chicken in the SAME amount of time? Try Baugher's, on the other side of town.
