Ask any of the locals where to get some good pizza,
and they'll direct you right to Antonio's.
They have so many different types of pizza (two hundred ~ three hundred ish), including my favorites: chicken quesedilla, tomato and basil and el guapo. There's so many options- 10 to 20 different types of pizza is on display at a time, with their usuals like, cheese or Sicilian, etc. with daily specials that change every day. Prices range from $1 to $3 ish per slice. You can also order whole pans.
The place is small, and pretty crowded. Not a good place to eat in. There are park benches outside of the place and people usually eat there. There's a camera at the corner of the store, lookig outside, which takes pictures every minute and is posted on the web. It's fun to see the weird things people do for the camera. Line is incredibly long depending on the day and the time, but it is SO worth it.
If you're a cute girl, the guys working there might say to you, "hey pretty lady" and other funny stuff like that. Don't get offended or anything. They do that to everyone. And another thing- make sure you locate the person to order to behind the counter before you order to someone else. They get REALLY offended if you order from one of the guys at the cash register or making the pizza.
Everyone here goes to Antonio's. ALL THE TIME. Lunch, dinner, and even breakfast sometimes; this is where all the locals go for quick bite. It's opened until 1 or 2 in the morning, (earlier during the summer, i think) which is when the bars close, and all the students are out. It's the busiest then. And during the night, you'll meet bunch of hilarious, red-eyed people coming out to satisfy their munchies.
They were rated "hidden jewel" at Phantom Gourmet, a restaurant rating show for New England. We're all so proud of Antonio's.
For casual local dining, Judie's is THE place to go in Amherst. An Amherst institution for nearly 3 decades, Judie's is known for freshly cooked food, delicious baked desserts of all kinds... and of course, popovers. Popovers are certainly the featured dish, to the point that owner Judie is known as "Popover Queen."
Judie's is open Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday 11:30 AM - 10 PM, Friday-Saturday 11:30AM - 11 PM. Closed on Mondays. The restaurant is small and does not take reservations, so be prepared to wait for up to an hour or so during peak times before being seated. Menus are posted in the waiting area so you can order your meal right away when you do sit down. Bear in mind this is the USA, so it's considered polite not to linger after you've finished your meal (thus granting the hungry people waiting in line behind you a chance to eat).
Favorite Dish: What's a popover, you ask? It's a type of bread made from egg batter that, while baking, puffs up out of (or "pops over") its baking cup, creating a huge, hollow, buttery, flaky concoction. You can have it as an appetizer with apple butter, or as a meal with any number of soups or stews (served on the side, so you can "fill" the popover yourself). Check the menu for details. I believe it's illegal to visit New England and not have a popover; what better place to try one than at Judie's?
