Mr. Dooleys: Authentic Irish Pub with great music
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place was named after the fictional narrator in Finley Peter Dunne's journalistic masterpiece. It's a favorite meeting place for the journalists, politicians and young Irish professionals. This is truly an authentic Irish pub which has live music six nights a week. They have over 13 imported beers on tap and serves hearty portions of specialities such as Shepherd's Pie and Irish Beef Stew. This is a great place for a pint and a chat and was our second stop on our own pub crawl that evening.

Pour House: A Cheap place to grab a beer and a bite
  • Tip Rating:
  • As we were walking along Boylston we came across this place. Now, I have read and heard about this place, and I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I was a bit surprised at the down homey atmosphere. They crowd is a mix of young and old and a bit loud, but what do you expect for a bar that claims to have the best and least expensive drinks in Boston (not sure about that). I wanted to try their version of the "Mojito" which is one of my favorite drinks for the summer. They were pretty good actually and I would definitely come back again just for that. They serve some really inexpensive food, with specials of the week, you really can't go wrong.

We didn't eat anything but we did have their "BEST MOJITOS IN BOSTON" which were so yummy!!

The Foundation Lounge: Every type of liquor imaginable
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Foundation Lounge is a beautiful place, with a small patio to the side of the lounge. After dinner we decided we wanted to go someplace different and just check out the nightlife scene. The Foundation Lounge was a great place for us to just wind down our evening. I must admit that I rarely actually go "clubbing" perferring a lounger/bar atmosphere and it is what drew me to this place. As we arrived, the line was out the door and half way down the block. The Foundation Lounge is located in the Hotel Commonwealth. The crowd is what I would call "beautiful college students with money that dress to the nines" type of atmosphere. The bar is large with the largest selection of liquors to appease anyone. The DJ was spinning some great music, but after an hour of a large crowd, being pushed and "oh I think I am getting to old for this feeling" we left.

Elegant Casual is the best way I can describe the dress code, eveyone was dressed very nicely.

The Sevens: Nice place on Beacon Hill

One of my colleagues at work is a Boston native and alumn of BU. As I was discussing visiting Boston for a few days with one of the other attorneys she suggested that if we find ourselves around Beacon Hill to stop by this place. As we strolled the beautiful neighborhood of Beacon Hill we stumbled upon the bar without looking for it. The bar is a great university hang out. There is a dart board in the back, a large TV playing the day's games and a great local vibe. We stopped in and decided to have a few beers. I had a Blue Moon and Roni had a Stella. We decided to order a quick bit to eat after spending some time walking around. We didn't want anything to large and decided we'd order something light. We were going to dinner in about 3 hours and didn't want to spoil it.

Beware, the food was horrible. I mean, the spinach dip was actually from a can and heated in the microwave and the chicken fingers were not crispy, more soggy really, because apparently they heated them in the microwave as well, yuk!! I would highly recommend this place as a quick stop for a few beers and maybe a game or two of darts, but stay away from the food!! My co-worker was horrified when I mentioned the lack of good food. She said that they were known for their sandwiches, go figure, I didn't try any of their sandwiches.

The Top of The Hub: Great Views of the City

Before dinner we decided to visit a landmark restaurant/bar/lounge here in Boston. Located on the 52nd floor of the Prudential Tower, the Top of the Hub boasts some of the best views of the city and skyline. The restaurant's décor is elegant with a romantic atmosphere. If you are looking for a restuarant to celebrate a "special occasion" or if you just want an exceptional meal with great atmosphere and views of the city, then I would highly recommend that you make reservations at the Top of the Hub. You can also enjoy a few cocktails and a small selection of appetizers at the bar. We enjoyed a few Martini's before heading to dinner at Davio's.

A full service restaurant and bar.

Black Rose: Doing our own pub crawl
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's funny how people will pay to do a pub crawl that doesn't include drinks, so on our last visit we decided to do our own pub crawl and started at the Black Rose. A week before St. Patrick's Day, all the pubs were gearing for the great celebrations. I don't usually drink beer, but when I do, I usually like Blonde Ale's. Black Rose has a Red Hook Blonde Ale, excellent!!

Squealing Pig: Best pub in Boston
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Pig is my favorite hangout in Boston. Friendly, funny staff, comprised mostly of Irish men and women, add to the atmosphere of the place. Old wooden tables, wooden theater seats in the large corner tables, and reclaimed iron beams and old drug store signs create a true "old feel". It draws an eclectic crowd of locals, hospital staff, museum employees, and MassArt and Northeastern students. The music is fantastic, and the 'toasties' are delicious. You can even get a deep fried Mars Bar here! Live music most Saturdays. Never a cover charge. On Thursday you will find Mike at the mic, with his funny song parodies. The crowds always sing along. There is also a side room with gas fireplace and wingback chairs, and separate bar that is great for a private party, but open at all times. They have a large pulldown screen with satellite TV and show the major sporting events. Once in awhile they host a dinner and a movie night, with a guest chef. The owner also operates a second Squealing Pig in Provincetown.

    King's: bowling, billiards, and beers
  • Tip Rating:
  • King's, the newest addition to the Lyons Group's clubs, took over the space of the former Cheri movie theater. There is a pool room, ten-pin bowling alley with jumbo screen TV's, a cocktail lounge, and a Summer Shack restaurant. My 40th birthday party was held here, and we had a great time. The staff was amazing, and let us take over one bar area (there was about 25 of us), and took very good care of us.

This is an Irish pub that we visited during St. Patrick's Day weekend during 2003. Nat is seen here laughing like we all did most of that whole trip. A few beers and a long day and it was all funny to us.

As you can see we were pretty casually dressed. Just a cool pub to hang and chill in.

    M. J. O'Connor's: Another Pub

  • Yet another pub we spent time in. It was a long day and Nat and Tamir and I were feeling like keeping it mello. The place was just the fit for what we needed. Walking distance from our hotel. And quite in the back room where we were able to chill away from the crowd. Too bad they close by 2am.

The dress code here is simple. Everyone should have fun as is.
