  • We went here to meet up the group on the November '03 trip. To my surprise the guy sitting next to me was from my local pub at home ( well at work but....)
Sorry man. I had no clue you owed them money...... ;-)))

We've now been here several times. Its a place that although quite touristy we seem to find ourselves in every time we come to town. Nothing wrong with tourist places once in a while.

Do be advised that the kitchen closes by 9pm. So it is NOT a late night snack place.

Its a pub. During the day anyway anything goes. I wore my evil empire shirt and no one said or did anything. (see Hong Kong for a pic of it)

Lansdowne Street & Kenmore Square: Clubs, bars, pubs, sports and more!

You know you want to spend a crazy night out on the town in Boston, but you just don't know what you want to do? Hit up Lansdowne Street and you won't be sorry. The entire block is jam packed with a variety of dance clubs, lounges, bars and nightclubs all right next to each other.

Off the top of my head I can name the following places that I know are right there, located directly across the street from Fenway Park: (I used to live 3 blocks away!)

    Axis: Dance club
    Avalon: Dance club
Jillians: Three stories of games, food and fun
    Jake Ivorys: Dueling Piano bar
Bill's Bar & Lounge: bar and lounge
    MaMa Kin: live music, bar
    Karma Club: dance club

Not directly on Lansdowne, but within a
2 min. walk from the Lansdowne Street/Brookline Ave. intersection are these places:

    Boston Beer Works (food, brewery)
    Boston Billiard Club (bar, pool)
    BB Wolf (food, pool, bar)
    cool bowling alley
    Copperfield's (bar, live music)

Ps. If you're not within walking distance from this area like I was, take the T to get there and back again, unless it's past midnight, then you'll want a cab. It's worth the $...DON'T DRIVE.

Depends on the place you are going.

Most places are casual dress except for the Clubs like Axis and Avalon. At those clubs no jeans, sneakers or gym clothes are allowed. Dress to kill if you are going clubbing!

The Burren: Great Music and Plentiful Pints in Boston
  • Tip Rating:
  • Go to the Burren in Davis Square in Somerville. It is truly like stepping into a pub in England (and Ireland too, I hear) Up front they have traditional Irish music, and the bar serves more different types of beer than you can imagine. Out back they have different bands playing. Try to go see "Jim Ambrose and the Swamptones" they are a truly awesome blues band. They mix lots of the blues type music that you are familiar with, and they have lots of REALLY GREAT originals too!

Wear anything. - My sister from California has noticed that most people seem to wear something emblazoned with the brand name "North Face" ha ha ha - Oh and keep in mind.. Boston and most of it's neighborhoods are all non-smoking...

Named after an Avante Garde artist. This nightclub is not for the faint of heart. Go wearing leather, pvc or a goth costume. The music is awesome to dance to, and the people watching is the best in the city.

No jeans, no flannel shirts, - Their website says 'wear black if in doubt" - I know the pink hair is a bit frightening..

Sunset Grill & Tap: An encyclopedia of beer!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Sunset Grill & Tap is a pretty cool place to hang, even for non-beer drinkers like me. Over 110 beers on tap and 400 available in bottles, the task of choosing a few from the 12 page beer menu can become quite a task, but a fun one at that!

A very laid-back establishment on Brighton Ave, the Sunset is a favorite hangout of area residents. Inexpensive drinks, good pub food, great beer selection, rocking jukebox, friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff and always a good time being had.

Come hang, have a drink, have a few...and keep coming back.

Allston: Local Bands & Rock Clubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • If seeing live bands is your thing, especially local bands, then Boston's Allston neighborhood is a perfect spot for you to get your groove on. Numerous bars with a slew of local talent on any given night, usually with cheap to no cover charge and cheap booze....especially good seeing that the neighborhood of Allston is the neighborhood where most of the young hipsters live and love in Boston.

    Great Scott's
    Common Ground
    Harper's Ferry
    The Kells
    O'Brien's Pub
    Paradise
    The Wonder Bar
    The Model Cafe

I could keep listing, but just take the Green Line (B) to the Harvard Ave. stop and take a walk around for yourself. You will surely find a place to call your own for the night.

Note: Anyone over 30 *might* want to avoid this area unless they are willing to party with a bunch of youngins. Mornings in this neighborhood leave little to be desired with the spots of puke every 5 steps on the sidewalks.

The messier and hipper, the better.

The Enormous Room: If there ever was a lounge to lounge at...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Enormous Room has got to be the most chill, hip lounge I have ever been to. Located in Central Square in Cambridge, one must first find Central Kitchen and then go through the door with the red elephant on it. Sounds like a treasure hunt, but that's actually exactly what it is (perhaps I should have put this under 'off the beaten path'). Once you reach the top of the stairs you have entered the Enormous Room.

Not exactly "enormous" but open enough to lounge away from others. Huge carpeted platforms line the black, brick walls with throw pillows and dim hanging lights and a touch of dark Moroccan decor. Even the sunniest of days leave the Enormous Room a hip cave to chill.

Light fare is served, I highly recommend the grape leaves and hummus, as well as a slew of drinks. It is easy to waste away a night, lying down, drinking, talking, listening to trippy electronica or whatever else the DJ is in the mood for. There are also occasional live performances.

This is more a hip hangout spot for twenty and thirty-somethings, but anyone is welcome.

Remove your shoes should you pick a platform to lounge on.

Ryles Jazz Club: Looking for a little jazz?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ryles Jazz Club is located on Hampshire Street in neighboring Cambridge's Inman Square. Walking back to the T one night after dinner with my companion, we stopped and watched through the huge glass windows, the live band, classy singing girls and dark tables filled with people enjoying themselves over some good drinks and good jazz and we couldn't help but be sucked inside for a short while.

We stopped in for a drink to check the place out and while I cannot say I have been here enough times to give a thorough review, I can without a doubt say that I would return again.

The atmosphere was fun, the drinks were strong, the music was upbeat.

It was a nice change of scenery from the typical bar scene.

Ahh The Model Cafe, my favourite seedy dive where I used to hang out with friends after recording music with my old band Dreamfield in Galaxy Park Studio.

It was also the closest I got to having a 'local' while living in Boston.

This place is a great rock & roll dive, full of personalities and actually ...
    I quite miss it!

Handy Tip : Watch out for the whiskeys - THEY BITE !

    As you come!

Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market: Choices, choices!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're looking for a crazy, uninhibited, DRUNKEN good time, then Faneuil Hall is the place for you! It's like all of the college keg parties you've ever been to, all rolled into one. Believe me, you definitely won't run out of places to see before curfew hits at 2am! You have a wide selection of Irish pub-type places, like The Black Rose, The Purple Shamrock, Kitty O'Shea's, etc, as well as places that have more of a "club" feel, like Parris and Q. Whatever it is you're looking for, I'm pretty sure you'll find it here. Word of caution, though: Most places charge a cover fee (anywhere from $5-$20).

Dress code is fairly casual for the guys (think JCrew sweaters and jeans), but the ladies tend to dress up a little more. Definitely leave your nice shoes at home, though - they'll just get beer all over them.
