Pack For Weather: Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • A regular old roller bag is fine. Bring a small day pack or fanny pack for sight-seeing or shopping. Boston is a city for walking so choose a comfortable bag for your take-alongs. Try to fit an umbrella in your bag.

. . Summer: Summer can be very hot and humid, so dress and pack light. . Winter: We don't normally get a whole lot of snow in the winter, but it can be cold and icey so bring some shoes with traction. It's also pretty windy downtown, so a warm coat & hat are a must. . Spring/Fall: The weather is very unpredictable between seasons, so be prepared for freezing temps and mild weather all in the same week. .

Boston can be as casual or formal as you want it to be. Pack for whatever you want.

Always keep a camera handy. There are plenty of photo opportunities all around town.

If you like to roller blade, bring 'em. There are bike paths you can blade on and in the Summertime, they close Memorial Drive on Sundays for bladers.

PACK FOR THE SEASON-AND THEN SOME
  • Tip Rating:
  • When going to Boston you should always check the local forecast before leaving your house. Boston weather can be tricky especially during the Fall and Spring seasons. Very often during these times you will have mild days with cool nights, so you'll need to be prepared. Always remember to pack rain gear when traveling to Boston and also a good wind breaker. Chicago may be called the windy city, but Boston has more windy days by far than Chicago. Bring at least one nice outfit for going out to dinner. Most of the better restaurants in the city require business or formal wear.

Always bring hand sanitizer especially when going to the Museum of Science, the New England aquarium and the Children's Museum.

I always carry my 35 MM SLR camera and my digital camera.

  • 'Comfort' Electric Kettle - Boston
    'Comfort' Electric Kettle

I was rather amazed to note, that they do not have electric kettles in the U.S.A. You would think, that they would, (wouldn't you?)They still use the old style stove kettle with the whistle, which is nice, but you have to hang around waiting for it to boil (This is no good in a MA winter I can tell you!) I asked a few people why this was and no-one could tell me. A few years later, I was on tour with my band and the sound engineer (electronic wizzard) explained that they do not have the voltage for electric kettles. (I knew there had to be some logical reason for it). So an electric kettle would take an age to boil (apparently). He also said, that if you took one of those tiny travel kettles and an adapter plug, it may well do the trick. Sad, but true, my family used to send me over PG Tips. I'm sorry, I am usually adaptable in a country, but I was there to live and it was a long cold winter. (Pic is of the 'comfort kettle' he he How appropriate).

    Photo Equipment: Packing list
  • Tip Rating:
  • Boston weather is notoriously fickle. It can be bitterly cold in the winter and very hot and humid in the summer, so check online before you go. It's also one of the windiest cities in the coutry. When it's windy, it feels about 10 degrees colder!

We only get something like 100 sunny days a year, not very many. So bring fast film if you're unlucky enough to be caught in gloomy weather.

Bring good waterproof boots in the winter. The streets can be slushy and snowy! Everyone wears boots in the winter. It's not even uncommon to see women wearing a full business suit with skirt and all and a pair of big klunky boots!

    Pack For Walking: Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring good walking shoes! If wearing sandals gives you blisters, bring your sneakers/running shoes. Wear any shoes that are comfortable because Boston's a walking city. I brought my sturdy combat boots so I was fine. It's simple planning, however a lot of people forget about how much walking they're about to do. Photo: My group of friends walking along the Freedom Trail in Charlestown... we had done at least 2 miles of walking by then. Photo by me!

Pack For Weather: Dress for the cold weather!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When we left Memphis it was rather warm outside, so I just couldn't imagine it being very cold when we got to Boston. All I took with me for warmth was a fleece pullover. It snowed the whole time we were there! Also very useful to take would be an umbrella. I've never had to use an umbrella to shield myself from the snow before, but everyone in Boston was doing it. I guess I'm used to being inside when it's snowing. I highly recommend taking an umbrella if you're going to Boston...especially in the winter months (even in April!).

In the Winter -- guess what -- it gets cold!!

Parka, wind-proof gloves, scarf, hat, long underwear, insulated boots... you get the picture.

    Pack For Weather: Weather changes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Comfy shoes depending on where you are walking - old (and new?) tiled sidewalks can be very uneven so watch out. Bring a light sweater and/or a light wind jacket as the weather changes quite often throughout the day, and usually the temperature drops a few degrees as soon as the sun goes down. Best to layer.

Pack For Weather: How 'bout this weather?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Boston is famous for its volatile weather...thus, the overused quote "if you don't like the weather in (insert name of city with crazy weather), just wait five minutes." In Boston, you can usually err on the side of cruddy weather. As for rain advice, I say leave your umbrella at home. I opt for a rainslicker with a good hood and waterproof shoes. The combination of wind and rain makes umbrellas usually useless.
