We were searching for a place to have lunch when we passed Mike's Bakery and Joann pointed out that Mike's Pastry is the place to enjoy a great pastry while here in the North End. I told Joann I would love to have a lobster tail and she said (I will not quote you, lol), that Mike's Pastry has one of the largest lobster tails she has ever seen.
We decide to come by some time after lunch and chech out what this bakery had to offer, OMG...she was so right, the lobster tail was large!
They have a huge selection of your typical Italian specialties and their marzipans are way too cute to eat.
Favorite Dish: Ferni had a gelato and I of course ordered a lobster tail to go since I was way too stuffed from lunch but I knew I would want one later on while we were back in our hotel. It was delicious.

It is a beloved "sweet" institution in Boston--a place where people come to satisfy their sweet cravings. It is a very popular pastry shop in the north end and has been a tradition for about 50 years. The original founders, Mike and Annette, left a legacy and many children to carry on the business. It offers a wide selection of items. You can also ship delicacies. Costs range for $24 for 12 marzipan, $75 for a 5 lb box of cookies, or 10 cannoli for $24.
Favorite Dish: I liked the biscotti because of its crunch and tasty base. But the torrene was also fine to sample.
I always say (as do many others) that you can't get a bad meal in the North End. Well, I'm sure the same holds true for it's bakeries. However, Mike's Pastry seems to be easily one of it's most popular ones, if not it's most. They've got a huge selection of pastries, cakes, gelato and the most colorful and inventive marzipan.
Favorite Dish: The lobster claws are huge, delicious, filling and decadent. My hat's off to anyone who could polish one off on their own in one sitting!
Instead of having dessert where you had dinner, you might want to drop in to Mike's pastry and see the wonderful dolci they are baking there. This place is pretty famous and for good reason. A lot of people go out of their way to get pastry here, whether to consume on the spot, or to take to a party. The place is also a cafe, so you can have some coffee with your treat.

This is a traditional Italian bakery that has existed in Boston's North End for decades. It's very popular, and as a result, tends to get very busy. But that's usually a good sign. All items are made fresh on the premises, and there's a lot of choice to pick form!
There's biscotti, cakes, cookies, pies, squares, torrones, gelati, and even fruit-shaped marzipan.
If you're looking for a taste of traditionally Italian baked goods, then definitely drop by!
Favorite Dish: Although not traditionally Italian, I bought an M&M cookie here. How can you go wrong with an M&M cookie? You can't! :)
Living on the West Coast, it's not easy to find bakeries like the ones I used to go to while growing up in Brooklyn, NY. Luckily, in Boston, I found one...Mike's Pastry in the North End. From the canoli's to the eclairs to the cream puffs, Mike's is the perfect pastry shop. They even have string hanging from the ceiling to tie the boxes with. And boy is this place popular. One time the line was out the door. But it's worth it for the wonderful assortment of amazing pastries, and the total atmosphere of the place.

This is a very popular spot among tourists (I found it listed in several tourist guides), and it's really a place where you can find yummy stuff. Just entering the shop is a nice experience with all those delicious looking pastries before your eyes and the freshly-baked bread smell in the air... it will be crowded most of the time, and you might have to wait on line to order your bread, but what the hell... The service is faster than I expected, though.
My friends & I just walked by this place while touring the North End in search of a place where we could grab a coffee, and realized they were giving free samples of their famous Ricotta pie to everyone who stopped by... so we grabbed a taste and we definitely loved it. It's a plain & simple cheesecake but ooohhh so tasty. So it allured me enough to come back another day and then I got to taste something different, which turned out to be just as good! If you're a sweet tooth like me, you'll love this place.... it's worth a visit to grab something delicious for breakfast or dessert...!!!
Favorite Dish: I'm sure most stuff is delicious here -- it's hard to choose among so many appealing pastries & bread. But I got to taste the Ricotta pie and the cannoli (a hard/crispy dough roll filled with a ricotta sweet & creamy mix), which they have in 2-3 different flavours.... I tried the chocolate chip and it was AWESOME!! Delicious!! And quite satisfying as well! The cannoli must have cost me about USD $2-3 and the smallest ricotta pie was around USD $16... not too expensive for Boston and well worth the money!
Mike's Pastry Shop on Hanover Street is in the heart of Boston's Italian North End.
If you like Italian cookies, desserts, espresso and gelato, don't pass this up. You'll love it.
One of the photos in Mike's is that of President Bill Clinton. It was taken while he was president. He visited the North End and Mike's to "press the flesh", gain voter support and enjoy the pastries.
HINT: Do NOT drive into the North End looking for a parking place. It's easier to find parking just outside of the North End or better yet take the "T".
It's better to park at a nearby ramp garage and walk a few blocks (10 minutes). Weekend discounted rates are available in the garage across from Quincy Market. The weekday rates are usually $30 - $35 per 24 hours.
Favorite Dish: I love the almond paste cookies. They are very fresh and tasty.
The only thing worth getting from Mike's is the gelato (Itaian version of ice cream that's even creamier). If you want cannolis look acoss the street and you'll see a neon sign that reads "Modern" but is anything but. Mike's fills their cannolis hours before you get them so the shell is soft. For the real deal, go to Modern. The pastries are better, the cannolis are filled when you order them, and you'll pay half the price you would at Mike's.
While Mike's Pastry does offer a huge (and I mean huge) amount of Italian pastries and desserts, I find them to be slightly overrated. The fact that it's always so incredibly crowded in there doesn't make it any better, either... How can you enjoy your tiramisu and caffe when you're constantly being elbowed? If you're looking for some really fantastic cannoli, I'd recommend walking a few blocks to Modern Pastry (also on Hanover St) instead!
This wonderful italian bakery has all sorts of scrumptious goodies! There are a few seats inside but usually they are are taken and there is a line out the door! Counters full of treats line the walls. Check out the whimsical marzipan animals and fruits. Personally I don't find them tasty, but they are great to look at. They even have a gelato counter, which is separate from the pastries. We got gelato and then picked up cannolis to go. Unfortunately when I went they were out of chocolate gelato so had the mocha instead, very tasty!
Favorite Dish: We were stuffed from lunch and the gelato so we got some pastries to go. I got two types of cannolis,and Lou got a napoleon, they were out of this world!
Yes - This is my first stop in the North End of Boston for a Lobster Claw & Coffee!!! No not seafood but real Italian Pastry!!! I lived in Massachusetts until about 25 years ago but let me tell you I go to Mike's Pastry's first thing as it hasn't changed in all those years. It's REAL Italian pastry at it's best. I know a good Italian shop when the Older Italians are having there coffee & pastry's there. It's also run by Italians of all ages. The young girl's that work there their first language is Italian & their Aunt's, Mother's & I've even seen their Grandmother's stop in. It does get busy but is worth the wait or else take it with you & go & have a nice pastry picnic.
Favorite Dish: It's hard to pick a favorite but I would say my favorite is the Lobster claw they always give me 2 forks like I'm going to share it. NOT!! I can tell you that their cannoli's, ricotta cheese pies, marizan cookies everything I've ever had there has been wonderful
