New State House. Here's the gold domed building that's sure to please any political buff.
Historic info: New, as in built in 1798, directly across from Boston Common. The land was once owned by John Hancock, the first elected Governor of 'the Bay State'. That gold dome was originally made out of wood shingles and is now actually copper covered by 23k gold. In the House of Representatives chambers, a wooden codfish is hung to signify the importance of the fishing industry for the commonwealth.
State House - at the entrance to Boston Commons, on Beacon Street, you can't help but see the beautiful gold-domedState House. Designed by Charles Bulfinch, it dates back to 1795 with the gold leaf added in 1874. Many historical documents are housed here, among them the original Massachusetts constitution which is the nation's oldest.

The Massachusetts State House, located on Beacon Street, was designed by Charles Bulfinch. Samuel Adams laid the cornerstone in 1795. It was completed on January 11, 1798, and was acclaimed as one of the more magnificent buildings in the country. Now it is the seat of the Massachusetts state government and is the oldest building on Beacon Hill.

The modern state house dates from 1798 and sits on the northern end of Boston Commons. Guided tours are available.

The state house is an interesting building to check out due to it's gold dome roof. We didn't go inside.
