  • Chinatown: definitely the ugliest chinatown I have ever seen - not to mention its seediness. Ok, there are some theatres with interesting shows there, but the area remains an ugly, unsafe, interesting one.

    Freedom Trail: Freedom Trail
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Freedom Trail. This red line that runs along the sidewalk takes visitors on a walking historic tour of the city. It's great if you're really interested in seeing the best-preserved historic sites, but the route is often crammed with clueless tourists as well as the usual Boston crowd. Many of the destinations are highly overrated, and it's probably best to take them in while passing by to less-mobbed (and quainter) places. In fact, I'm not recommending skipping any of Boston's famous historic sites, in fact I list many here. Simply encounter them differently than walking the mobbed and sometimes not very straightforward line.

This restaurant makes great Clam Chowder (CHOWDAH to locals), arguably the best in the city. However, it's located right on the Freedom Trail near Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and that means that it's constantly crammed with tourists. The gift shop in the front and various random historical data on the menu can give it a kitschy feel, but it does have historic significance, having existed as an establishment since 1836. For a more authentic Boston dining experience closeby, try Durgin Park in the upstairs of the North Market Building of Quincy (Faneuil Hall) Market.

If you want to experience the city's best chowdah, come to Boston during Chowderfest (July 4 week at City Hall Plaza) for a sampling of chowdah from many local restaurants.

The Freedom Trail is anything but about freedom. There are plenty of other cool old streets to wonder around without the masses.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice way to get to all the main tourist attractions in town but do stray from the path.

Use the trail to see all the main sights, preferably early in the morning so it's not so crowded and use side streets when you can to see more of the real city.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Paul Revere's house on the Freedom Trail is not really a tourist trap, but there are so many other things to see and do in Boston that it just doesn't seem worth the extra time and money. It's still interesting to tour but falls much lower on my list for Boston.

  • Fanieul (sp?) hall- It has a ton of shops and it's on the Freedom Trail. I hate going there because it is so crowded, but like I said, they have alot of shops. Go on Friday or Saturday and visit Haymarket Produce and Fish Market

  • Cheers is a tourist trap, but one I would recommend. Pictured is my dear Alphons from Netherlands. The show Cheers is very popular there. I will be back with more later :-)

  • Tip Rating:
  • Faneuil Hall Marketplace, AKA Quincy Market! This is a commercial posing as history! Near Government Center (home of one of the ugliest buildings in Boston, City Hall), this place does have some merit as a historical site, but the hundreds and hundreds of shops and restuarants make it a tourist trap in the extreme.

  • Don't bother looking for the 'Cheers' bar. It's nothing like the real set and really not worth the effort...

The old city graveyard is a more interesting place to visit (seriously).

Do recommend taking the short train ride to 'Salem'. Yes, it is a tour-isty place, but a very scenic and fun. You may learn something new about the 'Salem Witch Trials' (we did) and it is fun to tour some of the old houses. Take one of the 'walking tours' - lots of historic information on the area and the seaport that is there. A few good beer pubs around too. Interesting to see a place that you have heard many stories about.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Dont even thibk about going to Boston without a working visa. We were told by STA travel that there was no way we could get one, when we got to Boston we found out that we would have easily got a J11 student one. We looked everywhere for work but they were really strict about visas, i eventually got a job in a liquor shop but served a miner alcohol (they are really strict with it there, he looked 25). He came back into thr shop with two police men, it was a set up. I had to pretend I had left my passport at home and basically leave the country before they issued a court summons.
