Taxi Cabs: Getting around quickly
  • Tip Rating:
  • Around Boston you will find may taxi's. We parked our car at an inexpensive parking garage (more on that later) and taxi'd our way around town. The taxis are pretty inexpensive and fast and easy to get around town, especially if you are getting ready to go out for dinner or a night out on the town. A girl can only walk so much, especially if she is walking around the city in "4 inch heels" (wink)...

    Driving: Driving
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am not sure why everyone says not to drive in Boston, but it isn't any different than driving around any large city. Just like New York City, Boston has its share of traffic congestions and problems finding a place to park. We drove from New York City to Boston and found navigating the city in a car easy. Maybe because Roni hails from Boston, or because we live in NYC, this wasn't so bad. One word of caution though, the parking can be a bit tricky and you just may wind up paying a bomb to park for just a few hours. We drove to Summerville, parked and then took the "T" in town a few times. We also drove straight into the city and found a really inexpensive place to park (more later).

The Duck Tours offer guided tours of Boston and "what makes Boston the birthplace of freedom and the city of firsts". The lines were pretty long to get on one of these and I did notice that the majority of the people waiting to get on the tour were families with small children, young teens and some older folks. It is a bit pricey, but if you have a limited time to see Boston, why not? Prices are $26 per adult, $23 for students/seniors, and $17 for children between the ages of 3-11. Me, nah, I didn't (and probably wouldn't) get on one of these. Espeically in a city like Boston, a walkable city.

T / subway: Gettng by on the T
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best things about a metropolitan city is its network of public transporation. With the oldest subway system in the country, you can't go wrong riding the "T". The "T" is a great way to get around Boston. The subway consists of four lines - Green, Orange, Blue, Red and all togehter covers most of the city and the immediate suburbs. Living in a city like New York, I am use to riding the public transportation and find the "T" to be efficient and easy to navigate. One thing though, the "T" stops running after 12:30 at some stations and up to 1:30 am you may be able to get on. Make sure to know you designation, your line and the time schedule (although a bit off).

    Leaving the Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Leaving Logan airport for the first time is bound to leave you a bit confused as does getting away from most airports the cheapest and easiest way. If you don't want to shell out the cash for a taxi, the easiest way from airport to city center is taking the airport shuttle to the T. After exiting the terminal, stand at the bus stop and wait for any bus that reads "SUBWAY" or "MBTA BLUE LINE"- this takes you directly to the blue line Airport stop on the T. The ride, depending on which terminal you are at, will take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes and there are loads of suitcase racks on board. This shuttle is free and your easiest, cheapest and best bet to get into the city. Once at the T, take the line "inbound' to go towards city center (another 10 minutes).

    Bus Service: Chinatown Busses
  • Tip Rating:
  • On those weekends when I'm feeling a little tight I will take the Chinatown busses. They provide good and cheap service along the the entire east coast. From New York City to Boston is about $20 each way. On those weekends when you're going alone its quite nice.

    Amtrak Train: South Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • I use Amtrak and the Acela to come to Boston. Its pricy compared to driving but as gas goes up its more and more worth it. Especially with special features like the quiet car you can really just throw on the bose and zone out. Add that the much increased speed on the New York to Boston part of the Acela's run and it is a nice not very long ride.

Driving: Dollar Rental Car was okay by us
  • Tip Rating:
  • We had a good experience with Dollar Rental car. Their shuttle service to and from the airport was very, very prompt and friendly. The man behind the desk, Ron, was very friendly and helpful, even at 6:45 on a Sunday morning. We paid for a compact car but got a mini-van, because... well... there aren't very many cars in the lot on a Sunday morning -- so it's a good day for an upgrade. If you can call a mini-van an upgrade. ;-)

T / subway: Not bad Subway
  • Tip Rating:
  • The T here is a pretty good subway system. You will find it very easy to use and will get you around as needed. If its not much past midnight. Sadly like so many other systems around the world it does not run late night. One more reason New York is better than Boston.

Parking in Boston is terrible! Better just to walk or if you'll be travelling a distance take the subway known as the "T". It is a very comprehensible system with maps posted in the stations on the trains. Cost is $1.25 or a tiny token with a T emblazoned on it. It will take you one way, including transfers.. You pay on the train by the conductor.
