T / subway: You get Get to Boston by Plan,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • You get Get to Boston by Plan, train, Boat or Car. The Best Way around Boston is the subway system which locals call the 'T'. The Green and the Red lines are your best bet. Try to avoid the Orange line. I must reccomend that you say off of the public buses. You might think that you would see some local flavor. But that flavor all to often turns out to be alcohol.

T / subway: By Airplane or Car
  • Tip Rating:
  • Once you are in Boston I would not rent a car as parking is very expensive. I would suggest using Boston's 'T'. It will take you everywhere you want to go. And it's cost efficient .85 cents per each way.

  • Some call it a metro and others call it a subway, but in Boston it's simply called the 'T'. It's clean, safe and cheap, so hop on board. The lines are color-coded either red, green, blue or yellow and tokens are a dollar each way for any distance with a few rare exceptions to more distant stops. You can also purchase Visitor Passports that allow you unlimited travel for a designated time period. The fare is a reasonble $1.25 which includes free transfers. There are machines at most stops and the attendants will make change for you if you have larger bills. I took the T back from Cambridge to the airport on my September '05 trip and it only took about 20 minutes to go from the Kendall Square stop in Cambridge to the airport (switching at the Gray Line) and still only $1.25!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Since we hired a car we came to Boston by car on first night. This was not a very good idea... That's why at the end of our trip when we stayed in Boston 2 more nights, we looked for a hotel outside the city with easy acces to a 'T' station. Most hotels have a courtesy service to brings guests to the nearest 'T' station and pick them up again when they come back. Also from the airport it is very easy to get into town. It is only 2 or 3 stops, depending where you want to go and not expensive at all. Picture: We were very surprised when we got off the subway, we were coming out of this very nice building!!! When you're downtown, just walk. You'll see the most at your own pace. Great town for walking!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Take the 'T'! It's the Boston subway system and it's cheap ($1.00 per ride), safe, clean and very easy to use. We never got lost once. Inbound subways take you into downtown and Outbound subways take you outside of downtown. We stayed in Cambridge so we always used the T to get into Boston.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Try to take the 'T' when you get a chance. This is relatively cheap method of travel compared to the taxis. The Taxi drivers are very helpful and courteous, but they cost a lot of money. We sometimes spent $50 in a day on taxis!

  • Tip Rating:
  • I drove from NJ, about six hours. The T. Boston is one of the few US cities with a valid mass transit system. Easy to use and fairly cheap. Get a day pass if you think you'll use it a lot or it's raining. You'll find that most things are easily reached on foot.

T / subway: Introduction to the MBTA
  • Tip Rating:
  • DO NOT drive in Boston. Massachusetts drivers are insane and will destroy you should you try to drive, sincerely or legally. Parking spaces are impossible to find on the street, where the city has issued resident parking tickets to make you out of towners don't edge residents out of their own neighbourhoods. Rates at parking ramps are ridiculous. What should you do? If you're arriving in Boston by car, leave your car at a suburban terminus for the MBTA (T) rapid transit network (like Alewife or Braintree) and ride the train in. Boston is a city designed for people, so you'll find much more enjoyment discovering it on foot (using the T as a backup) than by car. The T is one of the cheapest systems in the United States, only costing a dollar a ride used to be 85 cents...but inflation happens). All kinds of passes are availible to curb the costs if you're making frequent trips.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting there is easy. Head for Massachusetts and keep going east until you hit water. Boston is sure to be somewhere nearby. Getting around is a &%$#@ ! Do yourself a favor and plan on taking the 'T,' what we call the public transportation system. Cabs are expensive (and where aren't they?!?) and bringing a car into the city....HA HA HA HA HA! You will age ten years. Whatever you do, make sure you get to South Station (see picture below...not a great view but it will do for now). This has been recently renovated and I love sitting in here because it yells TRAVEL!

  • When in Boston the internal T line (train system) is great, you can get frequent trains everywhere.
