Beware Hotel Telephone Charges

  • Beware Expensive Phone Charges - Boston
    Beware Expensive Phone Charges

When I was touring as a musician, I stayed at many hotels around the USA. In Boston, it was the Doubletree.

Whereas my room was huge and very nicely kitted out, a couple of times, I picked up the telephone to call the UK, realised the time difference made it not a good time to call and put the phone back in its cradle before dialing.

When I went to check out the nexy day, I had been charged $5 each time for just picking up the phone!

The crew told me, to charge you, by law, there had to be a sign 5 x 5 (inches I think) explaining the charges, or they couldn't insisit on payment. So if the signs not there, don't pay the bill.

When you are tired, possibly jet-lagged and touring (and therefore encountering different time zones) you are not always aware of such things, but in this instance, I argued my case and the charges were dropped.

Crime / After Dark: Southwest Corridor dangerous
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Southwest Corridor is a park running parallel to Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay. The area that runs between Newton Street and the train station is very dangerous after dark. We've lived in the area for 5 years now, and there is a mugging or a beating in this park every week. There have been disputes as to the jurisdiction because it's located in the city but is a state park, so no one seems to patrol there. Also, recent cuts have hurt the already tight security budget.

Do not enter the Southwest Corridor at night.

Parking & Driving: MAYBE THE CRAZIEST DRIVERS IN THE WORLD
  • Tip Rating:
  • Driving in Boston is dangerous for more reasons than you can imagine. Mostly because the roads don't make any sense, even to a Boston native. Commonwealth Avenue is a great example of this. If you decide to drive in the city please be careful and pay close attention to road signs. By the way, Boston natives have no fear what so ever. Also please don't drive up the T tracks. I've seen that happen one time too many.

Parking & Driving: Free Parking in Boston
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is lot's of free parking to be had in Boston. You just have to know where to look. I have lived in Boston for years and have never payed to put my car in a garage. Good areas to find spaces are Charles Street between the Public Garden and Boston Common, Newbury Street and Boylston Street in the Back Bay (and any of the side streets that run between Newbury and Boylston) , Harrison Avenue in Chinatown, and most of the side streets in and around Post Office Square.

NEVER park ANYWHERE you may see a Resident Parking sign especially Beacon Hill as the people who live here tend to call the cops and have your car towed if they can't find a space of there own. Don't park on Tremont Street, Causeway Street, Batterymarch Street or Cambride Street, you will be ticketed.

    More than just dirty
  • Tip Rating:
  • The title of my Boston page: "Love that Dirty Water" comes from an old Standell's song about Boston and the Charles River. The Charles River is heavily polluted, and people are strongly discouraged from swimming in it. I think I once read somewhere that they don't expect it to be safe again before 2020.

Not only is the Charles river unsafe because it is dirty, but also for other reasons. A year before I wrote this tip, three bodies were found in the Charles River in a week's time. A week before I wrote this, the body of a BU professor who had been missing for about a month was discovered by the BU crew team in the middle of the river.

Not very pretty, but it's true. So, PLEASE, watch out when you're around there. Despite these gross things about the Charles River, it is beautiful to look at if the weather agrees, and is a great spot for July Fourth celebrations.

    Parking & Driving: tricky road
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you drive, pay attention to the roads. Lots of roads in local are tricky. They turn off suddenly rather than go straight. The road signs are small. So if you are not confident to your eyesight, and not familiar with Boston, wear your glasses and pay more attention to every cross.

    Weather: Boston Weather
  • Tip Rating:
  • While the Prognosticators of Weather here in Boston are well trained and do their best, they are fighting a losing battle. The variables are just too great to accurately predict weather here in the North East.

So listen to the weather reports, but be prepared for weather other than predicted.

Parking & Driving: Do not attempt to drive while...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not attempt to drive while in Boston. You will only excercise your patience to its absolute limit or beyond. There's nowhere to park anyway. Take the T or cab it.

    The Big Dig: (http://www.bigdig.com)
    .
Someday it will be done. But for now, residents and visitors must contend with The Big Dig. Touted as the largest & most complex public works project in North America, The Central Artery/Tunnel project has been confounding drivers and pedestrians alike with street closings, reroutings, blockages and traffic cops who really don't have a clue about how to efficiently direct traffic.
    .
The project includes building several tunnels, highways, bridges and new public transportation routes in and around Boston, all in an attempt to relieve traffic congestion & gridlock caused by the thousands of cars that come into and out of town and Logan airport each day. Begun in 1991, it was promised the project would be complete by 2004, but we're crossing our fingers on that one. Visit the Big Dig website (http://www.bigdig.com) for interesting facts about the project as well as some pretty good pictures of what's going on around town. They even have a section about the archeological finds that have been dug up in the course of the project.
