  • Democratic Natl Convention

by coqueta Written May 31, 2004

I just wanted to let everyone know, if you're planning to visit Boston this summer you might want to avoid the week of July 26th. The Democratic Natl Convention is in town that week and there has been much discussion about it in my fair city. The city fathers are planning to close many major highways for a certain period of time (4:pm-midnight) and also to not allow commuter trains to enter the city. They will stop outside the city and commuters will have to be bussed in or take the subway. I love Boston! I lived here my whole life, I just wanted to let you know about that week, if you are coming that week be prepared. The mayor himself told employees/commuters to consider taking that week off or work from home!!

    Pretty safe city

    by meteorologist1 Written Aug 2, 2003

I felt that Boston was a pretty safe city and the people are also very friendly. Especially in the downtown area and attractions, I did not have any feeling of danger whatsoever. At the Boston Common people were having picnic on the grass and so on. In a college town like Boston, I believe I can say it's pretty safe, but like in any big city, danger exists so have common sense.

    More than just dirty

by mrdarius Written Apr 18, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The title of my Boston page: "Love that Dirty Water" comes from an old Standell's song about Boston and the Charles River. The Charles River is heavily polluted, and people are strongly discouraged from swimming in it. I think I once read somewhere that they don't expect it to be safe again before 2020.

Not only is the Charles river unsafe because it is dirty, but also for other reasons. A year before I wrote this tip, three bodies were found in the Charles River in a week's time. A week before I wrote this, the body of a BU professor who had been missing for about a month was discovered by the BU crew team in the middle of the river.

Not very pretty, but it's true. So, PLEASE, watch out when you're around there. Despite these gross things about the Charles River, it is beautiful to look at if the weather agrees, and is a great spot for July Fourth celebrations.

Wherever you go, check the VT meetings page. You may be there without knowing that VT meeting is taking place just a few blocks away from where you are. As you can see on the picture I did check the meetings page. For more info check Boston meeting page, July 13,2002

Along the Freedom Trail, you'll find the Copps Hill Burying Grounds just as you leave the North End and cross the bridge to Charlestown. Warning: Don't fall in the river and become a permanent resident of this cemetery!

On no account buy a hotdog from the hotdog stand that sits in Faneuil Hall Marketplace after midnight. They are disgusting. You will take one bite and spit it straight out into the nearest trashcan!

Unfortunately, Boston is pretty poor at after-hours eating. If you must eat something, you have two options, and two options only.

    a) go to Chinatown, which is open late but is a bit dodgy at the kind of time we're talking about here.

    b) find a 24-hour store such as a 7-Eleven and buy a sandwich from the cooler.

Nothing really different from typical warnings concerning big cities. Just be carful if you plan to take the 'T' at night (starting at 8-9pm). The East part of town is quite fine but there are some areas west and south of the city that you don't want to hang out at night. When I was there there, I heard on the news that at night some guys actually threw some cords and wires of some sorts in front of the 'T' and that it got out of its rails and caught fire... Yep, there are maniacs everywhere unfortunatly!! :(

Boston is a large city; use your streetsmarts. Also, public restrooms are scarce in Boston: try the Visitors Center on Boston Common, the Fleet Center Commuter Rail Building at North Station, the larger Department Stores at Downtown Crossing and the larger fast food restaurants like Burger King, McDonalds', etc.

Quick! Someone distract them with a banana!

Boston Warnings and Dangers

Boston is relatively safe for a large city, but if you go out looking for trouble, you just might find it.  Use common sense as you would in any city, stay away from isolated or unfamiliar...
