Cambridge Off The Beaten Path

Fresh Pond is Cambridge's fresh water reservoir. You can't swim here, but you can certainly picnic, and walk around the pond. There's a recreation area for kids, and even a golf course here.

Try parking on Huron Avenue, near the Belmont Cemetery.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery/park in Cambridge near the Fresh Pond Reservoir. It's about a 25-minute walk from Harvard Square down Brattle Street, which is lined with beautiful old (and enormous!) colonial houses, including the house where poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow lived in the 19th century (#105 Brattle). Alternatively, you can take buses #71, #72, or #73.

The cemetery is green and peaceful, the perfect place for a nice walk or a picnic. It's beautiful in all seasons, entrance is free, and it's also a great record of Boston history.

Another good university with a beautiful campus in the Boston area. It is actually located in Medford, very close to Cambridge. Can be reached by the Red subway line. Take the "T" to the "Davis" station. Then take the #94 or #96 bus. Get off at the Memorial Steps at Tufts University, just before the intersection of College and Boston Ave. Or you can walk 15 minutes along College Ave to the Tufts campus.

By the shore of Lake Halcyon lake in Mount Auburn cemetery is the memorial to Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Science church. The white marble monument consists of 8 fluted Corinthian columns holding up a circular ring.

Alot of people go to Harvard Square & visit Harvard Yard & browse among the many shops in the square. However, alot of people miss some of the most interesting museums in that area.
Go & visit the Harvard museums! There are a few to choose from including the Sackler Museum & Busch-Reisinger Museum (art museums) and the Botanical Museum & the Mineralogical & Geological Museum (natural history museums). Discounts are available if you visit more than one too.
The museums are not so big & you won't get the crowds as in the museums in Boston (like the MFA or the science museum).

The Bunker Hill Pavilion is in a park in Charlestown, the neighboring community east of Cambridge. You'll also find the Charlestown Naval Yard which contains the famous USS Enterprise naval vessel also known as 'Old Ironsides' because of the British canon balls that bounced off its sides.

Central Square is the place to go to meet people who live in Cambridge. It has the coolest cafe (the 1369, which is at 757 Mass. Ave), some of the best restaurants, and a more urban feel and diverse crowd than Harvard Square, which tends to be full of mostly white, mostly affluent Harvard students and suburbanites.

There's a Pinto stationwagon parked in front. Those were the cars that caught on fire when rear-ended. You don't see many of them on the roads these days.

If you go to Cambridge during the winter time, go around the city and enjoy the beautiful houses with the snow!
