Martin's: Perfect for Picky Eaters!

After spending the morning at the Rockwell museum, we opted for lunch at Martin's Restaurant in Great Barrington, Mass. Our waiter was OUTSTANDING in checking for Kate's allergens and not acting like I had three heads.

The restaurant is small and not fancy, but it's a great place for families (high chair was on its way before we took two steps inside!).

Favorite Dish: I ordered the vegetable tofu scramble with spelt bread (the English muffins had whey - he even knew to look for whey!!) It was excellent and reminded me that I could be scrambling tofu, too, whenever I miss eggs, and instead of just chunking up plain ol' extra firm for Kate.

Helsinki Cafe: A place to enjoy many delicious treats

Helsinki Cafe is a cute little place nestled inside a building just off the main street. They have a cute decor, with warm rich colors, an eclectic mix of furniture and friendly staff. You can just pop in for tea and dessert, or you can have a huge, full fledged meal, as we did. Dinner starts at 5pm, not a second sooner! Get there at 5, after that, it can get a bit crowded.

Favorite Dish: We ate so much!!! Started off with drinks, a "bloody helsinki" for lou and an iced mint tea for me.We shared the roasted garlic platter to start. Lou had borst. For our entrees, I had the swedish meatballs, and he had the biggest rib we've ever seen. THEN we had coffee and dessert...my goodness, we waddled out of there. but we had a wonderful time!

The price I have given is for the humungous meal we had, drinks, apps, main course and coffee and dessert. You could definately eat here for a more resonable price.

The Gifted Child: Cute Jam-packed Toy Store

We came to Great Barrington mainly for lunch, but enjoyed poking through the little shops as well. The Gifted Child is a gem tucked away on Railroad Street. The store is full of cute and whimsical upscale brand toys, as well as kids clothing and great costumes and dress-up clothes.

What to buy: Our "find" was a wagon full of sand/beach toys for about $15. Cheaper at Wal-Mart? Maybe, for a lower quality piece - and I wouldn't have known what to get our friend's daughter if the salesperson hadn't been so helpful!

rCrysal Essence on Railroad St

There are tons of really cute and interesting shops lining Railroad Street in Great Barrington. From cute clothing boutiques to used books to my favorite Crystal Essence, a gemstone and jewlery store which always smelled of incense and had the most wonderful treasures.

Bash Bish Falls in Mt Washington State Forest

Bash Bish Falls State Park is located in the southwest corner of Massachusetts. These fantastic falls are the tallest in all of Massachusetts. They are actually two falls separated by a large boulder. We stopped in on our way up to some shopping and dinner in Great Barrington, just 20 minutes away. There are two parking areas for the falls. The one we chose was the first one you come to after entering into the park for the New York state side. The hike is 3/4 of a mile each way. The other parking area appears to be a bit closer to the falls, but I have no idea how steep the hike is. From where we parked, it's a steady incline, but not too terribly steep. The falls are gorgeous. When we visited, it was just after a few days of torrential rain so the falls were thundering down! Usually the pool under the falls is a beautiful blue-green. When we went is was churning white and brown.
