 Battle Green in Winter by emilienoelle
It was on the Lexington town common, thereafter known as the Lexington Battle Green, that the first battle in the American Revolution was fought between the British Regular Army and the farmers and townspeople of Lexington on the morning of April 19, 1775. Though the people of Lexington were greatly outnumbered by the Red Coats, and many of them died, they were able to persevere against their enemy.
Each year on Patriot's Day, the second Monday in April and a legal holiday in Massachusetts commemorating this first battle, the Lexington Historical Society stages a historically accurate battle reenactment on the Green at the exact time that the actual battle was fought. This event is complete right down to the character actors who play actual townspeople and Brtish soldiers. It is an amazing sight to see and a must for American History Buffs. The Buckman Tavern was built c. 1709 and served as the headquarters of the Lexington Minutement. It is open daily for tours which are given every half hour. It's a stunning building...with absolutely fabulous grounds. People treat it all as their own park...leisurely enjoying the lush green carpet of grass. Lovers, bicyclists, parents and kids all share the space with equal joy. Unfortunately we arrived late in the day so everything was closed...but we'll be back! We were so impressed with the quality of the care given to the building as well as the park like grounds. Leave a Comment

Interesting business district with lots of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and sidewalks designed to accomodate the pedestrian shopper. Bricks, trees, benches and tastefully done signage combine to make the commercial strip a pleasant place to drive, walk or bicycle through.
My town has just gotten brick sidewalks and "bump outs" at cross walks. It certainly dresses up the streetscape and defines pedestrian walkways. I find that cross walks are more obvious and safer as a result. Leave a Comment
