Battle Green in Winter by emilienoelle "Which party fired first I can not exactly say." -- Lt. Edward Gould, British Regular Army It was on the Lexington town common, thereafter known as the Lexington Battle Green, that the first battle in the American Revolution was fought between the British Regular Army and the farmers and townspeople of Lexington on the morning of April 19, 1775. Though the people of Lexington were greatly outnumbered by the Red Coats, and many of them died, they were able to persevere against their enemy. Each year on Patriot's Day, the second Monday in April and a legal holiday in Massachusetts commemorating this first battle, the Lexington Historical Society stages a historically accurate battle reenactment on the Green at the exact time that the actual battle was fought. This event is complete right down to the character actors who play actual townspeople and Brtish soldiers. It is an amazing sight to see and a must for American History Buffs. The famous Minuteman by emilienoelle This statue of Captain John Parker is perhaps the most famous statue in Massachusetts. It is depicted on the back of the Massachusetts State Quarter and serves as an easily recognizable icon of our state. It was erected in memory of those who died on the morning of April 19, 1775. Buckman Tavern by emilienoelle The Buckman Tavern is located across Massachusetts Ave. from the Battle Green. This building served as the meeting place of the Minutemen before the famous battle. Among the Tavern's historical artifacts is its original front door, complete with a bullet hole from a British musket ball. The Tavern is open free to visitors from March to November. Leave a Comment

Historic Houses of Lexington by emilienoelle Lexington's downtown area is full of homes that predate the famous Battle and thus the United States itself. These homes, though privately owned, come under a strict set of rules and regulations by the Historical Society. They are only allowed to be painted certain colors and any renovations are closely monitored to insure adherance to historically accurate building styles. Historic houses which were formerly the homes of Patriots are marked as such with plaques and visitors are allowed to view the grounds and photograph them, though not allowed inside. A friend of our family owned such a house when I was growing up, the home of a former doctor who took part in the Revolution, and it was not uncommon to find people out in the yard with cameras! The Buckman Tavern was built c. 1709 and served as the headquarters of the Lexington Minutement. It is open daily for tours which are given every half hour. It's a stunning building...with absolutely fabulous grounds. People treat it all as their own park...leisurely enjoying the lush green carpet of grass. Lovers, bicyclists, parents and kids all share the space with equal joy. Unfortunately we arrived late in the day so everything was closed...but we'll be back! We were so impressed with the quality of the care given to the building as well as the park like grounds. Leave a Comment

Interesting business district with lots of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and sidewalks designed to accomodate the pedestrian shopper. Bricks, trees, benches and tastefully done signage combine to make the commercial strip a pleasant place to drive, walk or bicycle through. My town has just gotten brick sidewalks and "bump outs" at cross walks. It certainly dresses up the streetscape and defines pedestrian walkways. I find that cross walks are more obvious and safer as a result. Leave a Comment

It was Memorial Day and my husband is a career Navy man, so of course we spent time reading the memorial placques. There was a section beside the visitors' center which had an interesting collection of memorials. They were basically dedicated to every Navy ship ever named for the town of Lexington. They told the story of each of the ships and the years of service. Important battles, men who served on them, whether or not they survived battle. Interesting to think of how many times the name has been used. Leave a Comment

by Pawtuxet I didn't have to be told we were in a National Historic District to know that the people who constructed this Dunkin Donuts definately had to go before the historic commission when they built this donut shop. Just goes to show you that not every chain food store has to be so irritably ill designed as most of them are. Whoops! My prejudices are poking out again. Too many years of struggling to preserve our village, I guess. Leave a Comment
