The City of Lowell is saturated with museums, festivals, cultural attractions, & scores of other things to do. Because of this, the Lowell National Historical Park offers a free trolley ride to each & every attraction.
Although you can catch a ride at any one of the numerous stops, I suggest starting at the Visitor Information Center located inside the Market Mills as there are numerous attractions located in the general vicinity: the Revolving Museum, American Textile History Museum, etc. Also, downtown Lowell is nearby with numerous attractions, restaurants, & shops.
Lowell offers an excellent public transportation system, possessing a rather large fleet of buses that travel all around the city as well as to neighboring towns & communities. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) also has a rail line which extends from Lowell to the North Station in Boston, making numerous stops all along the route. In January 1842 Charles Dickens came to Boston and in the last few days, in February, before he moved on to Pennsyvania, he was invited by Lowell to visit Lowell's cotton mills. In Chapter 4 of his book "American Notes", which he published later that year, he described the rail journey from Boston to Lowell. The orginal line to Lowell was built by the Boston and Lowell Railroad on granite blocks - it shook the engines and carriages so much and was such an uncomfortable ride that shortly before Dickens arrived the track had been relaid on wooden sleepers.
