Millie Briggs: Support the Local Artists

by RhondaRuth Updated Oct 29, 2003

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Millie Briggs, artist & author

A great way to spend time during your visit to Oak Bluffs is looking through the wonderful shops, galleries, and antique stores to find that special gift or memento to remind you of your Island vacation. Oak Bluffs boasts a great selection of galleries, featuring unique artists many of which offer open houses where you can meet artists and shop owners.

We stopped at one artist's booth during the End of Summer Sidewalk sale and I meet this artist, Millie Briggs. I bought her cook book that also featured some of her art and she signed the book as well. Lovely lady!

What to buy: Art and Cookbooks. Millie is an artist as well as Caterer and also write cookbooks. I bought her book "It's Your Turn to Entertain". Other cookbooks of hers are, "I'd Rather be Swimming" and "Hey, I'm on Vacation".

Her specialty in art is island seascapes. Lovely!

What to pay: I thought the prices were very good. At the sale, I only paid $5.00

    Sidewalk Sale: Books or Antiques

by RhondaRuth Written Jul 20, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you're lucky like we were, there might be a sidewalk sale going on. All the shops up & down the little side streets had the stuff outside for sale at the end of the year. Some good buys here if you just look for them!

Souvenir Shops: Martha's Vineyard - Souvenir shopping

As a major tourist destination, Marha's Vinyeard has many nice shops on this island for your home decor or something to remember your wonderful vacation there.

So you will be spoilt with choice. Only your pocket book and credit card will hold you back.

Well, window shopping is a great past-time. At least buy a postcard or send one back home.

What to buy: Found a unique fish shape plate that has a map of the island.

Today, I can instantly recognized where I bought it from and recalled the names of the towns on the island and the great places where we shopped, ate and bicycled around.

So take your time to find that unique souvenir.

I love stores like this that are full of fun 'n funky and reasonably priced imported items. I could shop in them forever! I bought an adorable tunic that I wore during my trip. It's bright and comfortable and the perfect summer thing to wear. It will be a lovely souvenir for years to come.

What to buy: Fun clothes, jewelry, and home decor. BTW, the sign says "Third World Trading" but the website says "One World Trading." They are one in the same place. Perhaps they just can't make up their mind.

    Oak Bluffs
There are some fun antique shops on the Vineyard...this one in Oak Bluffs had quite a bit of the popular 20's - 40's collectables...and lots of old kitchen items. It was a fun stop along the way.

You may find yourself in the mood to both shop and take in a beautiful view. If you're in Martha's Vineyard then you'll be in luck when you visit the cliffs at Gay Head. There's a small strip of shops and snack bars that line about half the walk to the scenic cliff overlook. You can spend more time here than you normally would with these diversions.

What to buy: Souvenirs, clothing, lunch, and snacks. What more could you want from an outing?

Menemsha Fish Market: fresh local scallops and more

by dustmon Updated Dec 14, 2010
    Fish Market

This is the place to come to buy fresh caught fish, lobsters, clams, scallops, conch, and more if in Menemsha area on MV....Right on the water, we went in to get 2 lobsters for dinner that night, and the two lovely ladies were shucking fresh scallops as we watched!!!!
There was a huge pile of freshly shucked scallops so we changed our minds and got a pound of scallops and one 1 1/2 pound lobster for our dinner. Stanley, the owner was there---I asked him about the conch (live in a tank)---a favorite food of mine eaten in Jamaica, and he said his weren't quite as good as the Carib version, but that they made for a good chowder....They also ship around the country--I plan to order some conch for a Xmas party....
A really friendly place and fresh as you can get! Highly recommended!

    What to buy: anything fresh!

What to pay: 8.95 pound lobster
    12.95 fresh scallops

Blackwater Farm: fresh eggs, pork, beef and veggies

by dustmon Written Dec 14, 2010
    Mr Cock at Blackwater Farms

Really local place and not easy to find, but worth it if buying fresh eggs, meat or veggies in season. This is behind the Cottle's Lumberyard and Debbie and Alan sell fresh eggs, bacon, ground beef, and much more---veggies in season---they sell at local markets and also at the farm---I got a chance to see the chickens and cows in person and had a blast! Very clean and orderly place---very highly recommended!

    What to buy: eggs, bacon!

What to pay: cheap for the quality!
