The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates four commuter rail stations in Needham. The best train station from which to access Needham's downtown is the Needham Centre stop. The other stations include Needham Heights, Needham Junction, and Hersey. Trains run from South and Back Bay stations in Boston on the hour or half hour during rush hour. No trains run to Needham on Sundays.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates one bus line in Needham, which originates in Watertown Square, Watertown, runs through the city of Newton, connecting to Green Line rapid transit stations, and services Highland Avenue, Chapel Street, and Chestnut Street in Needham, terminating at the Needham Junction commuter rail station. The bus is a popular means of accessing rapid transit lines from Needham or of intrasuburban commuting.

By car, you can access Needham from Interstate 95 (or 128, as it is known locally for its state route designation) at exits 17,18, and 19 (Highland Ave., Great Plain Ave., State Route 135). All of these exits lead to the centre of town. Automobile is probably the simplest and easiest means to transport oneself around the town as well.
