Newburyport Things to Do

  • Local Charms

As a local, I can point you to some of the hidden gems others might miss. 1. The Cushing House museum, located on the corner of Fruit and High St, is a wonderful museum run by the Historical society with plenty of artifacts from 17th and 18th century newburyport. If you like maritime history, this is for you.2. Joppa Flats--if you continue along...

  • Maudslay State Park

This used to be the estate of the Moseley family (along with the Moseley Woods next to it). Now it's been donated to the state. There are a few traces left by which one can tell that it's a former estate, but mostly, it's just a nice park with nice bridges and nice trails, plus some very impressive and well-maintained flowers and ornamental plants....

  • The Port Area

There's a nice walking area at the city's port. I didn't really get a chance to explore it more fully as it was later in the day and it was very cloudy, so it was dark much earlier than it should be.

THE DOLE LITTLE HOUSE C.1715 was built by a cattleman. The original structure was a 2 room home with central chimney. There was a kitchen shed in the rear. Newburyport Restaurants

  • The best catfish I ever tasted

I love the seafood at Starboard Galley. It is always fresh, but the other day I had their "special" catfish. It was by far the best I have ever had. I wish this was a regular on their menu. But I have eaten here many times and I have never had anything I didn't like. The people and service are above average as well. Catfish!

  • Wierd coincidence or what?

I came up to Newburyport around 7 years ago or so and ate at The Grog. I wasn't impressed with it then nor was I this time around. So the fact that I've eaten there two out of the maybe three times that I've visited this city, really makes me wonder what I 've done to deserve this?Actually, the food is not bad here. It's look is tired and so is...

  • Lots of seafood, steak, and pasta..and...

I mean, could a restaurant name be more fun to say? GROG.It's cozy, yet huge. It's multi-leveled...all wood. It serves a large selection of beer, and has root beer, too! The specials change every day; there's always a lot of seafood included. I had a very nice pasta dish, and my meat-eating friends were happy with steak tips and other various...

I love this store too but its going out of business. I was over there and got some incredible deals. They still have lots of adorable shoes. I got a pair of ariat clogs and a pair of really nice spanish sandals (for $10, originally $128) and an unbelieveably cute pair of fidji boots. They had shoes - quality shoes - for $10. Almost everything was...

At the end of the day with the late sun on the boats, it seems even more enticing than in the noon day sun. Looks as if there are plenty of folks to sail with if that's your thing.

As you enter town, there is another historic house on the left, managed by Historic New England. It caught my eye because we have a similar house in our little village. Newburyport is very fortunate to have an array of property owners who are sensitive to the built environment that has survived since the early years of the country. We're making...
