    Herrell's Ice Cream in...

by hajin Written Oct 4, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Herrell's Ice Cream in Thorne's Market. There are two ice cream hotspots in Northampton -- Herrell's or Bart's and both offer a dizzying array of homemade ice creams, but Herrell's is by far the king of the cone!

Favorite Dish: This is really good stuff, ignore the long line that stretches past the door and get some -- they're known for the hot fudge and it's good, but I'm not such a fan of hot fudge so I think I'm not the best judge...

The town is filled with some good restaurants and for western Massachusetts, the selection is pretty varied. Some of my faves are Pizza Paradiso for, you guessed it...pizza; Sylvester's for a great breakfast/brunch (it's only open until 2:30 in the afternoon so don't think you'll get dinner); and Packard's for a cold beer and a good ol' hamburger.
The place has gotten even more multicultural with new Thai, Japanese and Moroccan places...

Bub's Barbecue...I'm not sure where it is, I have a feeling it's along Route 9 on the way to Amherst...
It's a shack with some picnic tables outside in the middle of what seems like nowhere, but it's good, there's a jukebox and all you can eat sides...

    Favorite Dish: Side dishes

Northampton is amazing. It is a cultural and intellectual hub. The restaurants are fantastic and the nightlife is fun and relaxed. Northampton has the highest population of massage therapists in new england, it seems. Whenever i visit i always get dinner and a massage. It's a night that cant be beat! I reccomend that you check out Massage Empire at 269 Main street and then have dinner at La Cazuela at 271 Main street. Its the best combination. You can get an hour long swedish massage and then a fine meal with the best margarita's in the country.
the best selection of tequila in the country. the largest tequila bar in the country too!

Favorite Dish: tha margaritas!!! and the avacado soup!!!

Northampton Brewery: Beer and food in the sun

by sarahandgareth Updated May 29, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Northampton Brewery is apparently the oldest continuously-operated brewery in the Northeast (we trust them, though who is really keeping track?!). Despite its proximity to a large parking garage, it has a very nice location, in a space with a gorgeous wooden deck for outdoor dining (including an outdoor bar).

The food is very solid for this kind of place - we mostly stuck to sandwiches since it was lunchtime - though their own beers were pretty disappointing. Their beers were generally verging on bland (they just didn't seem to have all that much oomph!), but they also had several other (mostly local) brews on tap and that saved the day.

Favorite Dish: For unusual brewpub fare, it's hard to top the Akara, a falafel-type dish from western Nigeria (when was the last time you saw that location on a bar menu?); although a little dry, it's a tasty and very different starting option. The kielbasa sandwich was excellent - as, indeed, were the other sandwich options, and the sweet potato fries were great.

Amanouz Cafe: Unusual Moroccan and Mediterranian Cuisine

by sarahandgareth Updated May 29, 2007

    Meatball Tagine

Although Amanouz has seating, it's a hybrid place where you order your own food at the counter, and then take a seat while the kitchen gets to work. They have a pretty extensive menu, with everything from somewhat offbeat breakfast choices (omelets with ingredients off the beaten track), to North African stews, as well as expected choices like hummus, falafel and kebabs. When we arrived, the restaurant seemed very crowded, but people move through quickly and it shouldn't be too hard to get a spot (at least once the semester has ended!). They also have plenty of regional sweet things, and delicious mint tea.

Favorite Dish: The North African tagine stews were very good, with nice spices, but they take a while to cook, which you may want to bear in mind if others are ordering quick-prep dishes!

Noodles: Asian Seafood Soup and Thai Ice Tea

by atufft Written May 15, 2011
Nava Soup at Noodles, Northampton, MA

Just down the hill from Smith College on Main Street is the modestly priced up artful decor of Noodles. This is a very clean operation with a thoughtful menu. I had the Nava soup, a clear bean noodle soup with seafood and chopped peanut garnish. It was wonderful. Noodle's receipe for Thai Ice Tea is perhaps overly sweet but outstandingly good in terms of concentrated tea flavor. This is a good place to economize on a low-fat meal relative to the other upscale Italian and Bar & Grill places nearby.

The Tunnel bar: Smokey but fun

    by bonvoyage212 Written Feb 22, 2003

Great place for a martini or scotch. The bar in the former access to teh train station. Long and narrow with club chairs and areas for conversation. It is a cigar bar so be prepared.

Favorite Dish: Cosmopolitans. Light menu of items such as shrimp cocktail and baked brie. Warm mixed buts brought to the table with your drinks.

Joe's Pizza on Market Street: For generations- the coziest spot in town

    Joe's never changes. That's a good thing.
On tight little road, far off from the neon sushi bars of downtown, Joe's has been a landmark of comfortable dining.
