if you are the intrepid shooter of lots of films and videos on your travels, then you must have a powerful optical zoom camera like a canon sx50 (which has a 50x optical zoom) or a nikon coolpix 510 (42x optical zoom). They are less bulky than the DSLR cameras and the zoom capacity lets you view and shoot objects and pretty girls from far away....

You can rent bikes at the Cape and if that is something you want to do then don't forget to bring bike packs with you so you can carry a picnic with you to eat on some nice bluff. Water shoes, sandals, and clothing for warm and cool weather are a must. The days can be hot in the summer but cool off quickly at night, particularly in May, June,...

  • finding a good direction

I found it difficult to locate a good set of general maps and guides for Massachusetts. There are plenty of destination guides such as ones for Boston or Worcester or CapeCode but not an overall guide. AAA Trip Guide for the Northeast and Delorme Massachusetts Guide probably had the better information. Grab one of those if you can and put it in...

Flip flops or water shoes for beaches as some beaches have coarser sand, pebbles and the sand does get very hot! Even in summer nights can get cooler so make sure you have some warmer clothes like sweatshirts or light jackets.

If you're going to go to the beach (and in the water for a swim) on Cape Cod, be aware that the shoreline is filled with sharp, broken shells and pebbles that were murder on my tender soles. I found some swimming slippers in one of the department stores. A must have if your used to the Pacific shoreline.

We visited in July--the height of summer and of tourist season. Take your bathing suit and plenty of sunblock. The water on the Atlantic side is awfully chilly, even in midsummer. If you plan to surf, be advised that many of the surfers we saw were in wetsuits. You'll want sandals or surf shoes that can get wet, so you can wade along tidal pools...

A cooler was invaluable on our many trips back and forth to the beach. We have a six year old so it is nice to have water, juice and snacks ready to go rather than have to head back up to the house. Family Travel
