Finz by kazander Lou's sister recomended Finz to us, saying it was "the best seafood ever". She has never once steered us wrong, so off to Finz for lunch we went. It was a beautiful fall day, the sun was shining, the temperature was about 65 degrees (F) so we decided to sit out on the porch overlooking the marina. We started with drinks, for me, the Sam Adams Octoberfest and for Lou a Bloody Mary which he said was one of the best made ones he had had in a long time. For Lunch, Lou had oysters and calimari, I had the fish & chips. Both were indeed the best we had ever tasted. It was a great break from the hustle and bustle of Salem on Halloween, great food, great atmosphere and my favorite company:) 2005 Update- we went back to Finz for lunch. Although the food was still quite good, the service was incredibly slow, And this time we couldn't sit outside :(
everything we had was very tasty. Leave a Comment

Fried Dough! by kazander All over the place there were Street Vendors selling all kinds of goodies, from roasted nuts to sausages to our favorite, the fried dough. Now it wasn't fried dough like a zeppoli you might find near NYC, nor was it fried dough like a funnel cake you would find at the Jersey shore. This fried dough was someplace in between. One large dough pancake that reached over the edges of the plate and was liberally doused not only in confectioner's sugar but with cinnamon as well. MMMM, so bad...but so good! Salem Beer Works by kazander We had heard great things about the Salem Beer Works so when night fell, we decided to go there for a few of their famous Pumpkin Ales. There was a bit of a line to get in, but it moved quickly. When we entered, I headed over to the "Beer Line" at the bar. After a minute or two, beers in hand, we found a spot to sit down and sample. We were slightly disappointed! Where was the pumpkin flavor in our pumpkin beer? Where was the nutmeg, vanilla and other spices that they boast as ingredients in this holiday brew? Not to be discouraged, I decided to try the Blueberry beer, which i had seen other patrons sipping on, blueberries bobbing around in the evervescence of their beverage. This had to be good, right? Nope. Give me a Sea Dog Blue Paw any day over this stuff. Oh well, we still had a good time:) Leave a Comment

This was a great place to have breakfast and I am really happy Liz suggested it. A bit up end in appearance but not very in price. I could see by the decor why Liz loves this place, it just screams her style. This is the restaurant to the Hawthorne Hotel and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a variety of tables available from those for 2 up to 8 or 10. A few of each. Was funny when we left to see they seated two quests at a round table for 8 as that is all that was available. The menus had a nice selection of breakfast items so it was hard for me to choose. I finally decided on the Seafood Benedict and some Orange Juice. Liz went with the pancakes and a cappucino. Our waitress was very nice and attentive despite they had her running around between two dining rooms.
I had the Seafood Benedict and I loved it. One of the most amazing breakfasts I've ever had. Leave a Comment

This place was bad. We came strictly because it was an idine and we were checking them out. Sadly this one left us disappointed.
My taco salad was horrible. It was little more than any old salad dumped in a taco bowl and meat and salsa poured upon it. I ate about half of it strictly because I was hungry but rest assured I will not come back again. One our way out of Salem, SES and I stopped at this place to eat, only because it was part of the American I Dines program. This was a mistake to eat here. The food was nasty, the service wasn't anything great and the waitress got my check wrong. The one saving grace was the Buzz Lightyear walking around making people laugh. It turns out every Sunday a different character come to have brunch with the little ones.
I ordered the baked scallops. When they arrived they were covered with some bread crumb mixture and they were way over cooked. SES got some taco salad which looked like they took a garden salad and dumped some meat on top of it and served it as a taco salad. The iced tea was good.

Edgewater Cafe by RhondaRuth This was my first visit and I 'm sure there'll be many more, altho without my Hubby. He doesn't like Mexican food much at all, but since it was my birthday, he took me there for my celebration. The decor inside could use some updating and the booths are rather small if more than two people are sitting at your table. BUT the food and the service were great! I'm looking forward to trying another dish on my next visit.
Chicken Chimichangas - Tender chunks of chicken and Jack cheese in a fried flour tortilla topped with their special sauce. This is what I had for my B'day dinner and it was wonderful! Leave a Comment

Salem Beer Works by LoriPori As we were all getting hungry, we headed to the SALEM BEER WORKS for lunch. There were ten of us all together - Hans & I, Chris, Ed, Jenny, Melanie, Angie, Emily, John and Steve. Salem Beer Works has 16+ beers on tap, 20+ wines by the glass, and 80+ menu items. Hans and I had the Nor'Easter Classic Burger with fries ($9.95) and a side of Mozzarella Sticks ($6.25) and iced tea. The Burger was HUGE and delicious. Leave a Comment

The Thai Place by RhondaRuth We were walking about Salem's Walking Mall and discovered this place for Lunch. What a pleasant surprise it was! My husband is very picky, but even he was pleased with the dish that he got. Of course the food is NOTHING LIKE Chinese (which we also like), but we didn't know what to really expect. Delicious! Forget your in a mall, the food is great here!
We'll go back a few more times before we get a favorite dish. I'll be taking a picture the next time I'm there! We ate here after visiting Nathaniel Hawthorne’s inspiration for “House of the Seven Gables.” It’s just a couple of minutes walk from it and is practically right across the street. The interior is very tavern-like and despite being touted as a “tourist place” by many of the shop people on the street, they seemed to be filled with locals. Or else it just seemed like everybody knew everybody. Of course, we were there right before the real tourist season started so that might have made a difference.
The menu seemed to be standard tavern fare. Although they did have seafood and other specials available, I wasn’t feeling well and ordered a grilled cheese on white bread with home fries. The fries were great-russet potatoes seasoned very well. The prices were low to average and they took credit cards. On the day that we were there their dessert specials were Indian pudding, key lime pie, and ice cream.
