Salem Train Station by kazander We deliberated on how we would get to Salem for Halloween day. We were staying in Boston for the weekend so we really had 2 options. Drive there ourselves, or take the train. All the people I asked, here on VT and also family members and friends strongly suggested the train. The traffic into the town is apparently horrendous. Even during the 1st weekend in October my future sister in law said it took her 2 1/2 hours to get the last half mile into town! EEK! So we took a cab to North Station in Boston and then hopped the 10:15am train. It was all so easy! The train lets you off about 2 little blocks from the main section of downtown, an easy minute walk. The entire town is far easier to walk than to drive around. Many of the streets are only for pedestrians and later in the evening many of the main streets are shut down to traffic as well. Take Route 128 East towards Gloucester from I-95. About 2 miles from I-95, take the Route 114 exit. Follow Route 114 to downtown Salem. The signs in Salem were excellently marked. So follow the sign to the attractions. Most major forms of transportation are available in Salem being that it is a seaport and a large suburb of Boston. I drove into Salem and used the trolley to get around. Parking is at a prenium during the week because Salem is also a county seat and has many people working in it. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Salem is approximately 20 miles from Boston and Logan Airport. There is commuter rail service to Boston-North Station, but please remember that it runs much less frequently than Boston's 'T' subway system. 24 hour taxi service is available. During tourist season, trolley service is available around town. There is a large municipal parking garage above the Museum Place Mall. Daytime parking is difficult and expensive, because Salem has a large courthouse and during the day there are many people in court or working at law firms who take all the parking places. And that's in addition to all the people who park near the train station to commute to work in Boston! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

The city parking can be expensive at $1.50 per hour or more. They have garage parking and some surface right in the middle of town. Museum Place Mall is the most convenient, but I did not want to pay the high cost for this town. The other parking is on the streets, and meters charge 75 cents an hour, but street is only good for 1-2 hours most places. Free parking is by the Salem Common park, if you could find a spot. The MBTA commuter lot at the north end of the town may be the best choice. It is only $2 for all day. It does fill up with commuter vehicles, though by 8:00 during the week. Otherwise, parking down by the harbor may be one other alternative. Theme: Car/Motor Home

Waiting at the Salem Train Station by RhondaRuth If you're in Boston and want a great place to go for a day ... take the train to Salem. From the North Station at the Fleet Center, it's only $3.75 for a 30 minute ride to Salem's Depot. From there you can walk into Salem and to many of the attractions such as the Peobody Essex Museum and the House of Seven Gables. A great way to spend the day and let the driving be done by someone else. There's lot's to see & do in Salem besides enjoying the "Historical Feel" to the city. Leave a Comment

Best way to get around Salem is on foot. Drive there, park your car and walk. I can't remember one thing that we wanted to do that we needed to drive to. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

From Boston, just take the train!! It's cheap, fast (about 30 min) and a lot less trouble than driving! It is not a big city so walking is defenitly the best way to get around! Leave a Comment Theme: Train
