  • Colonial Nails

While we were there, they did a demonstration of making nails. I seem to remember that they could make them by hand, or in the slitting mill. I tried to take a picture of the sparks flying from the blast furnace with its twin 18-foot bellows. Of course it was too dark to see anything except the fire and sparks. The guides explained how they turned...

  • The Place for Steak

The Hilltop has been here for over 40 years, staying in the restaurant business that long can only mean one of 2 things: 1) The food is really good, 2) The owners are crazy. It's a great place to get a steak. Filet Mignon

  • old fashioned butcher shop/ grocery...

The Hilltop Butcher Shop is a delight. The prices are cheap. There's a little produce department, the vegetables look really fresh. The butcher shop area is cold like a meat locker, and there's any kind of steak/ meat you are looking for. You can also buy Hilltop sauces and dressings. The bake shop has quality packaged goods. I worked in a...

There's a local rivalry between furniture stores in Massachusetts. Jordan's Furniture provides a Disneyland-like atmosphere but their furniture is just not as good as Bernie & Phyl's. Bernie & Phyl's is unpretentious and has good quality furniture.Bernie & Phyl’s has been listed as one of the “Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores” by Furniture/Today for...

Saugus Warnings and Dangers

  • Wild "Mad Cows" terrorize unsuspecting

Along the backroads of Saugus, miles from the hustle and bustle, there's a gang of wild vicious cows that roam the countryside. Make noise while hiking, to let the cows know you are in the area. If surprised, they are known to attack. If you are unlucky enough to stumble upon a cow and her calf, stretch your arms out to make yourself look bigger...

  • No Tresspassing

This was a sign on one of the levees alongside of the mill. I don't know exactly why it was posted as 'no tresspassing', but it might have been to keep people from wearing down the levee, or to avoid them falling off into the marsh on either side of it.You can see how choked with vegetation the area is (there was a dock nearby this point), and you...

Saugus Tourist Traps

    mooooo

by KarenandCory Written Aug 25, 2005

Route 1 in Saugus is a strip of wonderfully tacky stores and restaurants. It's totally honky tonk but there are great places to eat such as the Hilltop Steakhouse, with it's herd of cows and giant cactus.

    Lots of shopping.

Saugus Favorites

The Saugus Iron Mill is located along the banks of the Saugus River. When we were there, the area where ships would have docked was choked with plants, but one of the main reasons that this mill was located here was that the river could provide power. The mill wheels are still operational, but now the NPS notes that there are over two hundred...

  • Historic House on a Historic Site

This restored seventeenth century house was the home of the Iron Works manager. It is an original house, whereas the rest of the mill is a reconstruction.I know that we toured this house when we were at the Iron Works, but I think it was too dark for us to take any photos inside. I'm pretty sure that this house is not handicapped accessible, but...
