  • Bull & Finch Pub / Cheers

    Boston Tourist Traps

Yes, this is a local tourist trap. No, you will not be fooled. When you enter the Bull and Finch (Cheers) you know it is a tourist trap. But....YOU DO NOT CARE! This is where you came to see a little of the past, regarding the TV hit show,"CHEERS". To make your vist to the "Cheers" location, all the worthwhile, make sure you pose with the cast of...

  • Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market

    Boston Tourist Traps

Faneuil Hall is an incredibly difficult tourist trap to avoid, and to spell, in equal measures. But, it ain't so bad in the grand scheme of things. A. It's architecturally historic B. Winter visits make the market a welcome respite It's also got a vibrant street life and some good little shops so far as tourist draws go. Plus, as Boston can be a...

  • Duck Tours

    Boston Tourist Traps

This tour takes you around the city in a reconditioned W.W.II amphibious landing vehicle, passing by the main historical landmarks of the city, and then splashes into the Charles river to have a view of the city from the water. This is in fact what is most appealing of this tour: the land-and-water journey, and the fact that the vehicles are...

  • Freedom Trail

    Boston Tourist Traps

The Freedom Trail is anything but about freedom. There are plenty of other cool old streets to wonder around without the masses. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice way to get to all the main tourist attractions in town but do stray from the path. Use the trail to see all the main sights, preferably early in the morning so it's not so crowded and use...

  • Union Oyster House

    Boston Tourist Traps

This restaurant makes great Clam Chowder (CHOWDAH to locals), arguably the best in the city. However, it's located right on the Freedom Trail near Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and that means that it's constantly crammed with tourists. The gift shop in the front and various random historical data on the menu can give it a kitschy feel, but it does have...

  • Boston Tea Party Ship

    Boston Tourist Traps

Talk about built for the tourists. The boat is a replica set up purely for the tourists to visit and the guide buses to visit. the story may be true but the boat is tacky. In fact it's capital T TACKY. Take a photo and move on.

  • Newbury Street

    Boston Tourist Traps

Newbury Street. Mecca for overpriced, trendy, ecclectic shopping delirium, unless of course you actually like that sort of thing. This view is not the most luxurious of Newbury Street, but I guess my camera couldn't afford to get the whole steeple in that shot so I just made up my mind to take what I could get and head back home. ;-) If you like...

  • Swan Boats

    Boston Tourist Traps

I will never figure out why people bother standing in line to ride in the Swan Boats on the pond in the Boston Public Garden... You can walk around the pond in about five minutes, so, it's not like you're really "touring" a large body of water... If you want to really do something touristy in a boat, go on the slightly more obnoxious Duck Tours of...

  • Cheers in Fanuiel Hall

I am from Boston and whenever I go into Fanuiel Hall I hear people from out of town talking about going to the "original" Cheers in Fanuiel Hall. Many do not know, but this is a replica, the real Cheers is on Beacon St.

  • Camp fires on the beach

The beaches at Cape Cod are open until midnight or later and you'll see people sitting there at night with a big hole dug into the beach and a fire going. It might be tempting to go and do the same thing but you need to know ahead of time that it requires a permit from the local town hall. It's easy to get--just ask the beach patrol (pictured here...

  • Tourist Time!!

Summer and Fall are the busiest times in this New England state and this can pose some difficulty in getting around. We have no major highways in the western part of the state, other than Interstate 90 that runs east/west but has very few on/off ramps. Driving through the small towns can be tedious, unless you are in no hurry, have some good music...

  • The Cheers Pub...

Okay, folks it was just a television show. And although it was a good show at first, it became very monotous and was probably on the tele a few years too long.Besides the inside of the real Cheers Pub here in Boston looks nothing like the television version. Surprised? Don't be and don't bother...there will probably be a long line of tourists...

  • Plymouth Rock

2 words: Don't go! Plymouth Rock is exactly that - a boulder. Not much memorable about it aside from being able to say you've been there. Use the day to go out to the Berkshires instead! Very beautiful and peaceful out there.

  • The biggest tourist trap in...

The biggest tourist trap in Massachusetts is visiting Old Sturbridge Village. It's a waste of time. You're supposed to get the experience of colonial times, but honestly, just rent 'The Patriot' (starring Mel Gibson) and avoid the cold weather and smelly animals.

The 'Cheers' bar - The Bull & Finch. I just think it is an ordinary pub with ordinary so-so pub food. It was kind of neat that it was the inspiration, but I did not see a resemblance and it is so crowded that hosts with headsets communicate to find you a table (kind of takes away from an intimate pub experience) and then usually lead you away from...

  • Fanuiel Hall is built for...

Fanuiel Hall is built for tourists and if you want to meet other tourists, well, then you'll love it. Maybe it's worth seeing just so you can say you were there, but for my money, it's a waste of time. Ditto Newbury Street, where everything costs twice as much as it should and everyone is very busy impressing one another.

The 'Cheers' bar. Officially known as the Bull and Finch Pub, this familiar facade is on the corner of Beacon and Brimmer Streets. The inside looks nothing like the TV set and the place is always full of tourists, so no one there knows your name.

The 'CHEERS' bar (Bull & Finch) looks nothing like the one from the TV series. Nor are any of the staff there (except on photos plastered all over the wall). You can buy a souvenir though, from the terribly overpriced gift shop!

  • Don't waste your time at...

Don't waste your time at Durgin Park resaurant in Fanieul Hall. If you are looking for some New England attitude from the wait staff coupled with New England fare and a cozy atmosphere go to The Barking Crab! Some of the other tours are kind of cheesy, but at least worth a visit to learn the history of the city.
