Middle Earth: Filling up a dorm in Ann Arbor

  • This Shop is WILD! One half is a card/gift shop, with all kinds of kooky gifts like teeshirts, games, little nick-knacks, cards, some of which is slightly provocative and has definatly been stocked with a college kid's humor in mind. The other half is my favorite half. Its filled with hand crafted items, antiques, and cool accesories like purses and jewelry. They even have unique furnishings and decorations for your home or dorm. The have the full Hello Kitty an Friends line, as well as many differant brands of soaps and lotions, among them my favorite, Burts Bees. This store is wonderful, I havent listed half of what they've stocked up on! It really is a catch-all kind of shop.

Dorm accessories, unique furniture, books, funny cards and gifts, hand crafted jewelry and accessories, lotion, soap and makeup lines.

    anywhere from $.25 to $200

  • It's full of interesting clothing, with lots of textures and materials available. The South American home decorations are fun, too.

All cotton dashikis and caftans, bulky wool sweaters, long, airy summer dresses, wool pea coats, rag-knit winter gloves, peasant tops, poets shirts.

    $19 (all-cotton caftan) to $120 (oriental-style silk skirt & sleevless top)

  • Peaceable Kingdom is just plain fun for kids & adults. They have a long row of wooden bins, filled with a amazing array of odd, inexpensive stuff. Have fun here!!

I love the little fold-up fans, miniature dice, chinese finger traps, mini flip-books, wind-up chattering teeth, magnifying bug boxes, silky oriental change purses, alligator clickers...well, you get the drift.
They have some interesting jewelry, and a cute array of baby/toddler items. The stuffed-sock monkey is soooo cute!

The bin items range from 0.75 to $3. Other items in the store range from $5 to $100.

The Earport: Egyptian arm band for my Halloween costume

  • The Earport is a delightful little shop, full of low-to-medium priced jewelry and a few home accents. They specialize in silver jewelry, the kind you have to polish. For the silver afficionado, though, these pieces are worth the effort!

The metal coil Egyptian armband, either silver or gold. Celtic design earrings & necklaces. Southwest style earrings. Whimsical designs.

    $5-$500

  • Very eclectic! A wonderful variety of handmade items, with a nice range of prices. When I'm looking for a gift, or want something special for my home, this is where I go. The staff is friendly, and I always find great things.

Out-of-the-ordinary, well designed and less-commercial items

Can you really go wrong with a shop called the "Chocolate Cafe"? This franchise name is largely in the state of Indiana, but neighbouring state Michigan soon picked up on it. They specialize in chocolate candies, fudge, cheesecake, ice cream, coffee, and espressos.

I must say though, I was a little surprised to find when I walked in, it was a lot like any other chocolate/candy store I've been to. With a name like the Chocolate Cafe, I was expecting to find exotic items, like chocolate covered fries or something wild.

    Mon-Wed. 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
    Thurs. & Fri. 7 a.m.-11 p.m.
    Sat. 9 a.m.-11 p.m.
    Sun. 10 a.m.-9 p.m

Definately buy: The chocolate covered Michigan cherries about $6. Definately do NOT buy the 'chocolate' hand or body cream, smells horribly like medicine.
