I'd like to be even-handed here: probably there was a point at which the A2 Art Fair was a fresh and intriguing event rather than a marathon slog, generally in hot and humid weather with way too many other people all bent on discovering new talent or simply finding something to hang up in their living rooms. But if so, that point was a long way in the past. I am certain that our family wasn't the only one to take refuge elsewhere during the run-up to and actual weekend of the Art Fair.
This year, the "original" Art Fair runs from July 20-24; the South University fair begins on the same date but ends on July 23.
Unique Suggestions: On the other hand, if you rigorously limit your sojourn (in terms of both time and number of booths inspected), it's always possible that you'll have an enjoyable time. And of course there ARE some wonderful artists who exhibit at the Art Fair.
Fun Alternatives: Assuming you're more interested in the vendors than in fighting the crowds, download a list of those exhibiting and check out their materials on their websites.

The Ann Arbor Art Fairs are actually not art fairs at all but the revenge that Sauron
the Dark Lord takes on the unsuspecting. Beware! If you come here during
Art Fair season, you will not be allowed to leave without buying something
extremely cheesy and probably mounted on a long stick. You have been
warned.

Downtown is wonderful. The city is really quite clean, and abounds in trees & plants. Lots of interesting shops and a great variety of cuisine for a small city.
