Harbor Haus: Excellent German food & beer
  • Satisfaction:
  • My wife and I ate dinner at the Harbor Haus. We had seared whitefish with warm German potato salad, steamed vegetables and garden salad with edible flowers. (As we were leaving the premises we saw the chef come out of the kitchen and pick a few flowers from the adjacent garden. That's fresh!) In a two-week trip in the Northwoods, eating several meals of whitefish, this was far and away the best of the whitefish. Further, the service was excellent. And we had a table at the window with a view of Copper Harbor's namesake and further out into Lake Superior, which made it all the more enjoyable. If you're in Copper Harbor and in the mood for a little splurge, I highly recommend Harbor Haus!

    Seared whitefish!

The Pines: American Style Breakfast or Lunch
  • Satisfaction:
  • Since the Harbor Haus no longer serves breakfast, we had to look else where for a morning meal out. There are two restaurants in Copper Harbor that serve a presentable breakfast. The Pines is reasonably priced, and will serve you traditional morning fare such as eggs, omelets, hash browns, sausage, bacon, ham, bagels, pancakes, and French toast. If you arrive early enough they also make their own sweet rolls daily.

We have never eaten a lunch here, but they advertise that they make their own soups and pies. The lunch menu includes these, plus chili, salads, burgers, bratwurst, stuffed potatoes, sandwiches, shrimp, and cod or chicken baskets. Tuesday through Saturday you can also eat dinner here, although don’t go too late, as they close this dinner hour at 8:00.

We only eat breakfasts here, and I tend to get a fried egg, hash brown potatoes, and sausage.

The Harbor Haus is a great German restaurant located in Copper Harbor. It has all the standard German favorites and some American offerings too. Be sure to get there early if you want a table overlooking the lake!

The Tamarack Inn: My Favorite Pancake Breakfast
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Tamarack Inn, a reasonably priced restaurant, is where I go for breakfast if I am not in the mood for the traditional egg breakfast. Open from May through October, then from December through March, this restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Their breakfast menu includes eggs, pancakes, French toast, fritter French toast, hash brown potatoes, breakfast pasty, Belgian waffles, omelets, bacon, sausage, and ham.

We have only eaten breakfast here, but I checked their menu to see what their other meals included. The lunch menu includes such items as sandwiches, appetizers, broasted chicken or fish baskets, pasties, 7-inch deep-dish pizzas, and desserts.

The dinner menu includes sandwiches, appetizers, broasted chicken, lake Superior whitefish, Lake Superior Lane Trout, pasties, shrimp, steaks, broasted Alaskan Pollock baskets, 7 or 14 inch deep-dish pizzas, and desserts including homemade pies.

My second photo gives you a view of the inside of the Tamarack Inn.

I go here for the Blueberry Pancakes, however, I do not get a side order of either the link sausage or hash browns. Their link sausage is fatter around in size than I like, and both the sausage and hash brown potatoes are greasier than the sausage and potatoes at the Pines.

Harbor Haus: Great German and American Food

We really love the Harbor Haus Restaurant on Lake Superior in Copper Harbor and always eat here if we anchor in the harbor after a cruise across Lake Superior, as well as when we drive up for the day. If you arrive by your own boat, the restaurant possesses a dock for your dingy or shallow draft boat. From the Harbor Haus you have a fine view of the mouth of the harbor and Lake Superior. You may see geese swim by, humming birds at their feeders, a sailboat entering the harbor, or a large commercial ship in the distance on the “big lake”. Fresh Superior trout and whitefish, seafood, steaks, and German Dishes can all be found on the menu. Their dinner time German potato pancakes are great, but they are listed as an appetizer, and for me they are an appetite killer, as they are HUGE. They have some great desserts, also. Our son likes the Black Forest chocolate cake. I like the Grandma Dyson’s Bourbon Pecan Pie—chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, but very rich and filling. With a name like “Haus” you can be sure that German Beer is one of the items you can select to quench your thirst.” Dinner entrées cost about $12 - $30. The Harbor Haus is open from June to mid-October and serves lunch and dinner daily. The blue sign on the roof of the Harbor Haus states, “You are now breathing the purest most vitalizing air on Earth

As a warning, the lunch potato pancake is not as delicious as the night version. At night it is served with chunks of fresh apples and feta cheese, at lunch it has ordinary, nothing special applesauce on top, and no feta.

The Bavarian Cheese Soup is a favorite of mine. Their German potato salad is delicious, and traditional.

We were very disappointed in 2008 when we sailed up to Copper Harbor, and discovered that they no longer served breakfast. They had my all time favorite breakfast, fresh fruit filled crepes topped with whip cream. If they decide to again serve breakfast in the future, and have this item, it is not to be missed.

    Keweenaw Mountain House: Fine Dining
  • Satisfaction:
  • We didn't expect such elegance in the north woods. The Dining Room is open from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Cocktail Lounge opens at noon and remains open until guests call it an evening, which was usually around 11:00 p.m. or midnight.

    Open from mid-May through Mid-October.

There variety of fish each week was not surprising here along Lake Superior, the preparation was. The fish was fresh and prepared with delicious variety.

I still have an overall preference for the BBQ and the Roast.
