I fly through Detroit quite a bit, though I rarely see anything beyond the airport. I do like the new Northwest Airlines "Mid-field" terminal. From being my absolute least favorite airport in the United States, Detroit Metro has now become a hub that I enjoy flying through. For one thing, there are excellent connections here to Amsterdam! The airport is fairly well designed, and is certainly easy on the eye. The terminal trains aren't as useful as they could be, but there's something Buck Roger-ish about them. Food/beverage options are decent - though a Rock Bottom Brewery would be welcome! (Minneapolis Airport got a Rock Bottom in late 2006, so it's possible.) Another advantage now is the new Commuter wing, terminal C. Best facilities for Commuter planes I've seen anywhere in the world! (That's me on the little 30 seater prop jet, flying up to the U.P.) The Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) is a hub for Northwest Airlines. The new airport now is very convenient, and Northwest Airlines flies from many cities in the U.S. and worldwide to Detroit. The airport is located west of the city. The best way to get to and from the airport is by car. The airport borders I-94 and I-275. A short drive to Detroit, Dearborn, and Ann Arbor. Leave a Comment

Fixing the tire on my plane at DTW (FC) by rmdw The Detroit Airport is a beautifully modern facility, well organized and kept impeccably clean. I was only in Terminal 'A' but it has to be one of the longest buildings I've ever been in! There's a tram (small metro) up above for taking pasengers over long distances but I preferred walking the entire length, using the moving sidewalks whenever I could. Leave a Comment

Detroit Wayne County Metropolitan International Airport is the main gateway that connects Detroit to other parts of United States and the world. Detroit Airport is the nation's sixth busiest airport serving more than 30 million passengers a year. Northwest Airlines calls Detroit their home and so does discounter Spirit Airlines. Detroit has another airport called the City Airport which is served by regional airlines and charters. All the major airlines in the United States serve Detroit frequently. The car rental agencies at the Detroit airport are open 24 hours a day and so travelers landing in the middle of the night can still get to rent a car and drive if they dont want to take taxis/cabs. Detroit is by far my favorite airport to have a few hours to wait before flights. This place has really been re-done in the past few years and has an amazing amount of things to do inside its 3 concourses. Tons of shops and restaurants- my favorites being the SORA sushi bar, Diegos Mexican cantina, both on the A concourse, as well as the Grey Goose Martini Longe in the C concourse. There is a train running the length of the A concourse, a huge fountain in the center of A, as well as numerous flat panel TV's over the gates for thoise who like to pass the time with TV. Getting in and out of this aiport is very easy as well, with very fluid traffic flow and awesome service at the gates and at security checkpoints. The tunnel connecting the terminals is also something to behold- like an acid trip without the cold sweat! Also- a nice Westin hotel for those on an overnight connection. Leave a Comment

by Maria250 "Over the last few years Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) has undergone a dramatic transformation with a new terminal; a sixth runway; a south entrance road; new parking garage..Improvements continue with the ongoing construction of a new terminal to replace the aging Smith Terminal. The new terminal is scheduled to open in 2008." Leave a Comment

For the most part, getting around in Detroit means driving. If you’re not lucky enough to have a local to do this for you then you will need a car. Take care; driving in Detroit can be a challenge on many different levels. Street layout; the downtown streets were originally laid out in a wheel and spoke pattern. This means streets intersect at odd angles. Many streets are also one way. Maybe this worked well for horses and wagons but it makes for a real mess when you involve cars. Get a map and study it well before you head out. If you plan to just move around the downtown area park and take the People Mover (more on that later). Driving Style; People in Detroit tend to drive as if the devil is on their heels. That means fast and aggressive. A signal light changing from green to yellow is an indication to speed up, not slow down. Passing is done on the right and left. On surface streets it is regular practice to pass on the right even in a lane that is used for parking. A game of “chicken” will ensue to see which driver will back off and let the other lead. If you go the speed limit you may find a car directly on your bumper urging you so go faster. Just try to stay out of the way and you will be fine. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
