by SilverVelvet Opening nights at the C-Pop gallery are a great way to begin an evening. It's the place to be seen for Detroit's pseudostars and pretty people as well as a chance to see some great modern work and rock poster art from Niagara (see photo), Glenn Barr, Mark Arminski and many more. It's uptown chic meets downtown cool in a sexy little Detroit cocktail downed with an urban chaser.

by SilverVelvet The Fox Theatre is the crown jewel of theatre in Detroit. This grand theatre palace has been completely renovated and makes for a beautiful evening on the town. The grand house (pipe) organ is one of only 40 of its kind remaining in the US. On that night, Lord of the Dance was playing. The neighboring (blurred) marquee to the left is for The State Theate. by gakman Also check out the DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival). Since Detroit is the birthplace of Techno where else would you hold an annual festival? Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by gakman Detroit has great night life. Most cities are broken up into areas that have bars/clubs of a certain type. Detroit is no exception, except instead of going to a particular section of the city you got to different cities all together. Examples: Downtown Detroit is for either 'Freaky' kinds of bars like Space, or for Upper entertainment like the DSO (Detroit Symphony Orchestra), Fox Theater, Gem Theater, or Second City. Royal Oak is more Yuppie type bars/restarants like Memphis Smoke. Birmingham is more snobbish (sorry don't mean that to offend anyone). My favorite though is Pontiac, the colleage crowd, with bars like 70's wonder Have a Nice Day Cafe, topical fun at Tikki Bob's, or singing at the piano bar JD's Key Club, just to name a few. The pic at the left is Downtown Pontiac during the Arts, Beats and Eats festival (artsbeatseats.com). Leave a Comment Theme: Other

If you're able to drive, go to Royal Oak and check GoodNiteGracie (pub/café) with nice good looking people or/and The Theather (club) - it's actually a theather but they close on Saturdays and make a great party out of it! You´re staying Detroit Downtown, don´t miss the Music Menu, it´s a great bar, with nice lice jazz and some other stuff. They vary along the week... by SilverVelvet Miss your international pals? They're probably at one of the local salsa club nights. I dance salsa about twice a week and never cease to be amazed at the international flair. In my class, there are people from Sweden, Russia, Iran, Ghana, Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and more. In this photo, my instructor Duane Wrenn is teaching a new step to one of his classes. Photo credit: aeaendy@virtualtourist.com. If techno is your thing, Detroit is THE place. Catch a bit of it at places like The Motor Lounge, The Temple in Ferndale (on some nights), or The Shelter in downtown. Look out for THE internationally known DJs that have defined the genre... Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson as well as established innovators Richie Hawtin (Plastikman), Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen and the like. Honestly Detroit is spoiled with DJ talent... which is key to keeping it's underground party scene alive. On nay given weekend (at least once a month) you'll find abandon factories pounding the beat of techno as the scene here is still going strong... although you have to be in the know to find out about them. Ask a trendy 'raver' in Royal Oak or look out for party flyers at Record Time in Roseville or Motor Lounge. Already over 10 years old, techno is nothing new to Detroit or the global dance music scene. In Detroit, the genre has never really gotten into the mainstream. But with annual events like the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the cities diverse population comes to life in the center of town (Heart Plaza) over Labour Day Weekend. This is essential Detroit.
If you want to be 'in' with the underground, you'll need to look the part. Leave the Polo Ralph Lauren at home. Leave a Comment Theme: Nightclub

Go to Royal Oak---12 miles northwest of Detroit. Or else, to Greek Town, right in Detroit (for a tiny sliver of ethnicity). There are some good blues bars around here too: Sisko's, in Taylor. Or Memphis Smoke in Royal Oak. Or Ted's bar, in Clawson.
Its pretty blue-collar around here. No one will judge you harshly for being under-dressed. People are slobs here. Detroiters like to pretend they are a 'world class city'---as if saying it over and over, mantra like, will make it so. The blues bars are, of course, very blue-collar---t-shirt and jeans will do. You have the choice of 4 casinos in the area. Detroit has the Greektown Casino, The MGM Grand Casino, and The Motor City Casino. You can get to the Windsor Casino in about 10 minutes by going through the tunnel. Leave a Comment Theme: Casino
