If you know even just a little about jazz, then you should know Baker's. It's THE oldest running jazz club in the WORLD and the performers here read like a who's who list of the jazz world. Need I say more? Everynight they have live entertainment and they serve dinner & lunch.

ST ANDREWS: DETROIT ROCK CITY

St Andrews hall is a must for new music/ alt. lovers. Its got a cool kind of gritty underground feel and is an intimate setting - room for about 1000 in the hall and maybe a few hundred in the "Shelter". This place has been around for a while and is somewhat famous. Depeche Mode has played here as well as bands such as Jane's Addiction and Limp Bizkit. Visit here and you may catch the next big thing. P.S. sometimes techno

Located at the edge of Greektown, this Irish pub brings in the best of the town's partiers. A great place to be on St. Patty's day, they have live music, good food and fairly priced drinks. Also has their own shuttle to the sporting events, in which plasstic cups of your drink of choice are permitted.

Dress Code: No specific dress code.

Detroit is the home to 3 casinos. Motor City, located off the Lodge freeway, Greektown which is smack in the heart of the Greektown district, and MGM Grand, also located off the Lodge freeway just south of the Motor City. Ample parking in their own structures; Greektown has validation.

Dress Code: No specific dress code.

Fifth Avenue Downtown: Live music and a ballgame

Located upstairs and inside the Comerica Park ballpark, This large bar holds two good sized rooms. One room is home to a barrage of live music, and the other is more of a relaxing area with pool tables and couches with a TV. Large fully stocked bars can be found inside each of the 2 rooms. Parking can be validated inside the bar and the lot is right across the street, lit and fenced in.

Dress Code: Decent casual clothing; no tattered clothes or shoes. Ballcaps permitted.

Two rooms hold two different types of DJs and music. Also has an oxygen bar in the "chill room." Parking is ample, in a large lot across the street belonging to a restaruant, for a nominal charge.

Dress Code: Club attire, no tattered jeans or tennis shoes/ball caps.

Bleu: Don't come here broke!
HotRodEtte profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

HotRodEtte 374 reviews

Bleu is an upscale and extremely fun nightclub for those who enjoy dancing to electronic music. Usually on Friday nights a special international guest DJ will be booked, and on Saturday nights the resident DJ is there playing top 40 and mainstream dance music. The place is huge, and houses a large stocked bar in back, along with two more bars on each side and one more upstairs in the VIP section. The DJ booth is set up in VIP and there are also 2 more VIP booth sections on either side of the enormous dance floor.

Dress Code: You may wear jeans as long as they are dresssed up. The majority of the crowd dresses in dressy or upscale club attire, and no tennis shoes or ball caps. Women may wear hats as long as they are fashionable. Just keep in mind this place is quite expensive, so be prepared to drop a bundle when you walk through the door!
Valet only, unless you feel safe leaving your car on the street.

Altered State: Transformation

HotRodEtte 374 reviews

On Saturday nights, Detroit's State Theater is transformed into Altered State, the city's largest and longest running night club. You will mostly hear mixes of alternative and hip hop music, with DJ's spinning in the lobby as well as in the main room. You may also move up to the 2nd floor for a more chill-out type atmosphere.

Dress Code: No dress code, although tattered clothing may bring a frown to the door man's face and he may not let you in. Jeans and T shirts are OK.

Envy: Another upscale place
HotRodEtte profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

HotRodEtte 374 reviews

Envy is a bit along the lines of Bleu, however, not as large. This one has 2 floors, with a small VIP section on the second floor just to the side of the stairs. Both floors are equipped to hold their own DJ as opposed to the same sounds filtering thorughout the entire club. Drinks are pricey, however you may park in the lot next door or across the street, rather than strictly using valet. Keep in mind, Detroit is notorious for greedy lot owners to hike up their prices during special events.

Dress Code: Club attire; no tennis shoes or ball caps. Nice jeans MAY be worn but you won't see very many people wearing them.

5th Avenue Billiards (original Royal Oak location): Live Bands n' Billiards
LissyBits profile photo

This is one of the best live music venues in town where you can catch both regional, local and national acts blasting out the tunes. Generally it's cheap to get in the door $5 or $10 at most. The drinks are a pretty good poor... but not too cheap. There's lots of pool tables up and down. Trendy crowd. The music's upstairs.

Dress Code: Trendy hot sexy clothes. Jeans are cool too
