    Fair Lane: carriage entrance

Automotive pioneer Henry Ford employed nearly 500 workers (carpenters, woodcarvers and stonemasons) to create his 'castle in the Midwest' in record time. Constructed of Ohio limestone, with rooms panelled in domestic and exotic hardwoods, Fair Lane evokes an Olde World feeling of comfort and ease. At the same time, American ingenuity is demonstrated by the 6-level powerhouse, connected to the home via underground tunnel. The manor was completely self-sufficient in heat and light by means of hydroelectric power generated by the Rouge River that runs through the property. One level of the powerhouse still serves as garage space for Henry and Clara Ford's personal automobiles and carriages.
Tours of the estate begin on the hour Mon-Fri from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Luncheon is served daily in the Estate Restaurant, originally the home's swimming pool. Parking is abundant and free.
