    Red Wings at The Joe

  • People from Detroit are passionate for their hockey team - the Red Wings. In fact, so passionate that Detroit is known as "hockeytown". The Wings are one of the Original Six hockey teams in the NHL. Before becoming the Red Wings, they were the Cougars (1926-1930), then Falcons (1930-1932) and since 1932 have been the Red Wings. The Red Wings are one of the winningest teams in hockey- winning the Stanley Cup recently in 2002 and in both 1997 and 1998.

Bring your octupi. It is tradition to throw octupi on the ice at Red Wing games.

If you have the opportunity, go see a Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit is a major Hockey Town, and the Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2002, and in 1997 & 1998. Tickets can sell out quickly,. If you know you are going to be in town during hockey season, plan well ahead!!!

ford field in detroit is home of the detroit lions and super bowl XL. one of the things you can do while touring detroit is to take a tour of ford field. this tour will give you some insights on the construction of the stadium and how it became the home of the detroit lions. aside from the tour of the suites, locker rooms, and the field itself, if you are part of a group you may want to take advantage of their mini clinic for an additional fee. the mini clinic will give you and your group a chance to learn to pass, catch and kick a football for 30 minutes. if i'm not mistaken the fee is $5 per person for the mini-clinic and has to be booked by your group at least a month in advance.

for the mini clinic football equipment is provided. just don't forget to bring your camera and a muscle pain reliever!

    NFL games at Ford Field

Ford Field is a great place to watch an NFL game. Because it is indoors, you do not have to worry about the weather. The stadium is only a couple years old and has all the modern amenities a sports fan could desire. And since the Lions have been horrible the last four or five years, it is not that hard to get tickets.

  • Directions: Take I-75 Service Drive across Grand River and Woodward Avenues. Continue on the Service Drive and turn right on Brush St. Proceed one block, and Ford Field will be on the left.

    See the Lion's Play

While the Lion's are not a spectacuar team (Joe you can stop laughing now), the new Ford Field is a nice place to see a game. First of all it in indoors- so you don't have to freeze to death during a game like in other venues. The stadium's design incorporates a six-story former J.L. Hudson's warehouse, which had stood since the 1920s. The presence of the warehouse allows for a seating arrangement that was unique among professional American football stadiums at the time of Ford Field's opening. The majority of suites at Ford Field are located in the Hudson Warehouse along the stadium's southern sideline, as are the lounges that serve the premium club seats on that side of the field. The bulk of the grandstand seats are located along the northern sideline and both endlines, with gaps in the stadium's upper half at the southwest and southeast corners. According to the Lions press materials, "The inspired design that integrates luxury suites into the historic Hudson's Warehouse affords each site holder significant opportunities including: optimum views, easy access and customized floor plans. By eliminating endzone suites, Ford Field luxury suites offer goal line to goal line, corner-to-corner views of every play."

  • Address: Ford Field
  • Directions: At 2000 Brush Street, just south of I-75 (Fisher Freeway) and directly across Brush Street from Comerica Park. This is not a great part of town. We parked across from the housing projects. In other words- not a great tailgating destination.

This particular sports activity has come and gone, but hopefully someday will return again to Detroit. Super Bowl XL brought so much positive attention to Detroit. People all through out the Metro Detroit area really came together on this national day of football fun. I thought the least I could do was share some of the fun with you.
