Belle Isle, Detroit
Belle Isle to start off with was once a great park. Located in the Detroit River within view of downtown Detroit. Most of Belle Isle is in bad shape to start off with the enterance is in a bad neighborhood and the island just doesn't do any good for the average tourist. It is mostly run down with quite a few vacant buildings. The one nice thing about Belle Isle is this is the only part of inner city Detroit that you can spot deer. Also Detroit is the only major city in the United States that has an island totally used as parkland.
Unique Suggestions: Belle Isle has a zoo, a race track, an aquirium (largest indoor aquirium in the world), a yacht club, and several picnic areas. If you go check out the zoo. The Strand is the major street on Belle Isle.
Fun Alternatives: Detroit has so much to see either in the inner city or the suburbs. Belle Isle may have the things to serve inner city Detroit but Royal Oak has a zoo (The Detroit Zoo) which is actually in suburban Royal Oak. Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum are wonderful places to go. Explore Detroit, it truely is a great city.
Reviews from 2003 may have been accurate...but not today, in 2015. Belle Isle has been given a face lilt from statuary to the Conservatory. Visit the Aquarium and get a fine surprise on the amount of work that has gone into making this volunteer effort a fine, though still small, attraction. A Grand Prix track has been erected and the Chevrolet Grand Prix races will be held again this year at the end of May....so visit, enjoy and agree with me that this is no Tourist Trap....I am a fan and you will be too. If you are a Michigan Resident and have paid for the Recreation Passport with your auto registration as shown on your licence plate, entrance is no charge.
