Woodward Dream Cruise
On the third Saturday in August, Woodward Avenue (the main street which runs from the Detroit River) from Ferndale to Pontiac turns into the largest one-day gathering of classic cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles in the world. More than one million people line the street to see the show, as 40,000+ glorious automobiles inch their way down the street. Needless to say, this creates gridlock for anyone trying to make it from the west side of town to the east side, or vice versa. And if you have no interest in cars, the influx of travelers and the pre-Cruise congestion -- various ancillary events begin on the Monday before the WDC -- can leave you wishing you'd booked that trip to Mackinac Island instead.
Unique Suggestions: I recommend that you embrace the inevitable. Find yourself a place to park, get your lawn chairs and coolers, and sit down to enjoy the spectacle.
Fun Alternatives: If you forgot, and wind up at Woodward and Eleven Mile Road...go to the Detroit Zoo for the afternoon.Related to:

Gas in the city
Don't be heading into the city and think oh I'll just get gas when I get there. There are not very many gas stations and the ones that we do have I wouldn't want you stopping at. Plus it's pretty expensive. I know gas is expensive everywhere but you have a better bet of getting gas in one of the outlying suburbs.
Unique Suggestions: If you end up needing gas just lock you're doors while you go in to pay. Also there maybe (depending on where you are) a good chance you'll be asked for some change by a passerby so be prepared to hand it out or know what you're going to say as to why you're not going to give him any thing.
Fun Alternatives: If you're on I75 and heading south out of the city stop at Outerdrive, there's a BP there. If you're heading North on I75 you can get off on Warren (its right near WSU) so it's fairly nice gas station. Or if you're past that, go to 9 mile or even 11 mile to get gas.
As for I94 I'm not that familiar with east of the city but if you're heading West out of the city you can get off on Outerdrive and head into Melvindale. (That's where I went to high school)
Since Detroit doesn't see many...
Since Detroit doesn't see many tourists, there aren't exactly any tourist traps in the literal sense, but tourists who stray into uncharted territory could find themselves in a real trap (see Dangers and Warnings).

If you care for hockey, go see the wings, but if your going to see the wings just to see the wings, dont bother, just a hockey game. The cobo center and renesance center attract a lot of visitors, but theres ussually nothing going on in them, just a building in the abandoned detroit downtown
