by Juice183 A lot of people here seem to be a little overdramatic. One person even suggested avoiding the city and staying in the suburbs. That personally sounds like a waste of a trip to me. Sure some areas are best avoided, and there are a lot of abandoned buildings (some of which are beautiful), but that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the great things this city has to offer. Just use common sense and don't let people who have probably never been here scare you away. I'm not saying that there is no crime, but people live and work here everyday for the most part without incident. Experience Detroit with an open mind. Leave a Comment

If you are interested in seeing the worst that mankind can create for itself,, then visit the Brightmoor neighborhood. I am very familiar with the area because my Grandpa lived and died here. The area's heart is along Fenkell Road from Telegraph to lahser, Evergreen, and to Southfield. Despite what one may think, it NEVER was a nice area. It has been a place for the poor since it's beginning. A poor, working class neighborhood. But it was safe at one time. I drove by recently to see what kind of property $10,000 could buy. Not pretty! On my grandpa's street there's about 8 houses standing in 4 blocks. The trees are taking over where criminals aren't. It's ugly, burned out & destitute. You could very well hear gunfire. However, I can honestly say that my Grandpa was never a victim of any crime here. (Athough, he may have perpetrated a few) Brightmoor is on the egde of the city and it would be very hard for a tourist to get to and inadvisable to visit. But if you must see it, remember that Outer Drive can make this area difficult to navigate, and it's definitely best to lock your window's and look straight ahead while driving. And just remember all the cute kids playing in Brightmoor and send a check to Blight Busters! Leave a Comment Website: detroityes.com

If you are not from the area, I would not advise taking any shortcuts to your destination! Sometimes you may find yourself in an area that looks scary but there's nothing to be scared of. Other times you may be in a nice part of town and one wrong turn will have you in a nasty part of the city. As a visitor, get good directions, stay on course, or get a guide. Leave a Comment

Take it easy on your ride... by truesunn Probably because we have potholes so big you can swim in them after it rains! Michigan is notorious for the horrible condition of it's roads, mainly caused by semi's hauling tons of cars and car parts over them, and salt and ice damage in winter. Some of our potholes are so deep, if you do not slow down to go over them, you run the risk of loosing control of your vehicle or severely damaging the undercarriage, including ball joints and suspension! Compared to Chicago, Detroit is not necessarily a place you'd want to stay downtown and walk the streets. Simply, there isn't enough to do downtown. (yet) However, I am a white, suburban female and I and my other white, suburban female friends drive ALONE to downtown Detroit for many reasons: 1. Casinos 2. Sporting events 3. Bars and Clubs I feel perfectly safe if I do the following: -park in parking structures in well trafficked areas -stay on expressways until I am closest to my destination -know where I am going Suburbs to avoid: Inkster, Oak Park, Highland Park, River Rouge. Suburbs to visit: Royal Oak, Dearborn, Birmingham, Plymouth. Cities for hotel: Dearborn, Dntwn Detroit, Windsor, Birmingham, Farmington, Livonia Have fun... Questions? Email me please...happy to help Leave a Comment Other Contact: BelgiumBjork@aol.com

Growing up in Detroit my feelings toward my hometown are as follows. I love Detroit and will never run the city down, the downtown area and neighborhoods are far more safer than one might think. It's all relative to what your purpose of being in Detroit is, Detroit has a lot to offer and we are a blue collar no nonsense type of town. Detroiters work hard as I bill Detroit as the hardest working city in the world. This city is true to it's core, this is the Motor City and we have a huge industrial base here. So when you ask a question about Detroit the answer is probably different than what you've heard. Every major city in the world has bad parts of town, why don't we hear about the south side of Chicago or Harlem in NYC. If your going to bash Detroit I'm just not going to listen because I am true to my hometown and remember ONCE A DETROITER, ALWAYS A DETROITER. Leave a Comment

by dtownkitty Unless you like seeing this sort of thing, I highly suggest you stay away from this area. I have been through here many times in my life and have even conversed with some prostitutes, but i wouldn't recommend it. A drive through this area is like a scene from the Night of the Living Dead. Addicts wander back and forth aimlessly, mostly unable to rob you if they wanted to. This is Detroit's version of Skid Row; the home of 5$ a night , pay in advance motels. Ricky the homeless guy told me, "don't go there cuz they'll stab you and take your money!" so, I wouldn't advise booking a room at one of the hotels here. The good news is that the "Cass Corridor" is pretty much contained to a few square blocks. If you find yourself in this area, don't panic, just head E towards Woodward and you'll be outta there in no time. And it is ALWAYS a good idea to keep your doors locked wherever you go. Recently, the Detroit Police Department has seen budget cuts. As a result, many concerned citizens have taken to patrolling the streets. Don't let their cheeky appearance fool you! They are TOUGH and they don't take any crap from anyone!!!! Take my advice and be on your best behavior at all times(Don't litter or jaywalk), and try to STEER CLEAR OF THESE RUTHLESS VIGILANTES!!!! I see all this negativity about Detroit and downtown, and I have to say you all sound like a bunch of people who really don't know about the city. Your general statements without specific points of areas that are dangerous (which there are some in EVERY MAJOR CITY... I've been to Chicago, LA and NY in areas you don't want to be in) show your complete ignorance of the topic. After living and working there for over five years, and traveling very frequently off the beaten path, I have not once been accosted, harrassed, or attacked. I walk downtown all the time... and yes, I'm a white (not like it should matter), suit-and-tie professional who will travel at all hours to nightspots and to my office. Occaisionally, theres a homeless person but no more (in fact I would say less than) my tenures in LA or NY. Detroit is a wonderful place with lots of hidden gems, and on a real resurgence. Don't let misconceptions lead you astray and miss out on a great opportunity. Leave a Comment

Yes, we have the homeless. Detroit's homeless consist primarily of addicts, war vets, and those that are not mentally competent and the system has let down. (As well as some that make a decent living off of begging!) You will even see some downtown and they are pretty harmless (People tend to be very tolerant of their presence here, maybe more so because of the cold). But it is never a good idea to hand out money when traveling. Better to donate to a good charity. So if someone approaches you to "buy" a little veterans flag or "donate" don't feel uncomfortable. Simply give a sure , "no thanks" or just walk on by and they will leave you alone. But PLEASE do not be rude! I met a homeless man recently that was the victim of a horrible hit and run. Why? Because some people are rotten! So don't be an arse! It's not fun sleeping under an overpass in -10 F! Leave a Comment
