Things to Do

Casting Aside Aspersions

Casting Aside Aspersions, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  I have no idea who this pro-fisherman is but it was a prime photo- op. Road Trip Maxim Number One: When a Photo Op presents itself, take it. (Road Trip Maxim Number Two is a little more mystical: Always go to the left because you don't know what lies to the right. (As true...

Deer-in-da-Headlights

Deer-in-da-Headlights, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  How often does a buck like this walk through the woods of Michigan? Quite often before and after hunting season. My dad hunted for years and the only buck he bagged was using a caliber of bullet called a '67 Chevy. Was it worth totaling a classic car to have venison summer...

Honey Bear

Honey Bear, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  The bear reaching for a hive is actually covered with real dead bees. It is one of the many scenes peppering the man made mountain.

Animal Mountain

Animal Mountain, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  The first thing that catches your eye when you walk into Cabela's is the stories high mountain decorated with 'trophy' animals. It reminds me a good deal of Call of the Wild in Gaylord, Michigan- a museum devoted to rescued roadkill from northern Michigan. Both places depict...

Cabela's

Cabela's, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  Yes- it is a bastion for those who live to hunt and fish. And it does go out of its way to encourage wildlife conservation. As soon as you walk through the door you realize this is what Michigan- especially northern Michigan- is all about.

Food O' Plenty

A sign was posted saying it was voted the best deli in the county for 2004. The menu was full of traditional foods like fries and all meat hot dogs, but it also had wild game items. I scarfed a smoked bison sandwich on wheat with lettuce and tomato and a horseradish sauce while Keggar had the elk on white with mushrooms. Duck Lad played it 'safe' and had the Big Mouth Burger. I do have to say the steak house chili and cheese fries were incredible.

Stone Castle

Stone Castle, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  We thought it was just a rock shop but when we walked in, it was clear it was a haven for Wiccas. Duck Lad was fascinated by the crystals and stones while I went right to the feminist bumper stickers and picked up ones that said 'Eve Was Framed!' and 'The last time we mixed...

Judging Books by their Covers

Judging Books by their Covers, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  A classic example of finding out how true that cliche still is: Had we been intimidated by the name Candles and Curiosities, had our manhoods been threatened, had we kept driving, we would have never found a place that proudly displays now extinct beers as antiques. (For...

Silver Bells

Silver Bells, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  Silver Bells is one of those small town specialty shops that caters to Xmasphiles who plan all year for the week in December. It has also jumped on the bandwagon for the Red Hat Ladies groups that spring up in weird locations for their day events like casinos or outlet malls...

Russell Stover Outlet

Russell Stover Outlet, Dundee

Travler409 Says:  Across the road from the mighty mountain of manliness is a Russell Stover's Candy Outlet store. Small but loaded with left over Valentine's candy, we loaded up on coffee and sweets for the ride back.

Brookville Lake

Brookville Lake, Dundee

WILDEFLOWER Says:  Brookville Lake is down the road in Indiana. I heard there's a cute little community to visit by there. I will visit there soon if the weather holds out.
