The answer to this questions depends on what type of person you are, as there are plenty of things for the nature lovers, and plenty more things for the people who enjoy getting completely wasted and waking up in a stranger's bed. If you are the former, go during the spring/summer/fall seasons and just walk, bike or rollerblade around the campus, check out the trees, the Red Cedar River, and the general collegiate atmosphere. Then take a walk up to Grand River Avenue, the northern border of campus and grab some food at one of the fine restaurants. If you are the latter, wait till around 10/10:30 PM on any weeknight and head up to the bars in the downtown area. Check out the Peanut Barrel/BW3 if you want a little laid back atmosphere, Ricks/The Riv/Landshark if you want a meat market college bar. If you aren't 21, you have pretty much zero chance of getting into the bars unless you have inside connections. Tough luck for you, but you can wait until thurs/fri/sat night and take a walk around the student ghettos north and east of downtown and check out one of the 198719861234 real life college house parties that are sure to be going on. Make sure you say high to the oinkers when you see them.
Hands down, the 15,000+ person street party in Cedar Village, a convenient 5 step walk from my backdoor, the night MSU won the 2000 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Having been to Mardi Gras, I can say that the streetfest in East Lansing that night far and away exceeded the partying that goes on down in the Big Easy. I really really really miss watching MSU football/basketball at one of the downtown bars. I really miss the bars in general. One of the first things I'll do when I get back to the U.S. is hit the Riv for some good old fashion drinking, darts, and post-bar 'I can't find my way home' fun. Leave a Comment

Michigan State University has its own student-run radio station WDBM 88.9 fm, known as The Impact. They play a great line-up of college alternative bands as well as some local bands. It is paid for by students so there are no annoying commercial breaks. Walk around north campus. On the ancient shady paths of MSU's north campus there are numerous relics of the university's 130+ years as an academic center for the midwest.
Canoeing on the Red Cedar River on a quite summer's day with the chimes of Beaumont Tower's clock ringing in the distance. Leave a Comment
