East Lansing Things to Do

  • Downtown East Lansing-a walkable town

Why not take a nice stroll in a lovely college town. Up and down Grand River Ave and M.A.C are where most of downtown lies. There are a town of cool places to shop, eat and browse. Like most college towns, this place is loaded with coffee houses, bohemian book stores, vintage clothes stores and music shops. More than your fair share of cheap eats...

  • You have to check out the awesome...

Michigan State University is an absolutely beautiful campus. It is also the main reason people visit East Lansing. Grab your camera and take a stroll. Beautiful tree covered lanes with a nice little river which runs through the middle of campus. Very much a park like setting. Ivy covered buildings, including the famous Beaumont Tower. Make sure you...

  • The Mighty Spartans

Go visit Michigan State UniversityI was a student at MSU from 1980 to 1984 (when I graduated) and still have wonderul memories of my college days there. If you get the opportunity to go to East Lansing, a walk arund this beautiful campus is a must. Also, if you get the opportunity to go to a basketball or hockey game, go. Both teams are ranked...

East Lansing Restaurants

  • The best burger joint in East Lansing.

This is a East Lansing staple for sure!! THE place in town for a great bar burger and cheap beer that comes in buckets. Somewhat of a dive, (in other words, not totally douchbag yuppie like most of East Lansing bars) A little bit of a mix as far as age group. When I was in college, I could not go a week without a classic Crunchy Burger and they...

  • legendary EastLansing mexican restaurant

When I was a student this was the place to be for awesome nachos. 20 years later, they are still great. I am sure the other dishes are excellent too. Which is why there is always a huge line outside the door. The only thing I am bummed out about is the way the building has changed. It is now much more built up and it looks almost sterile. Back in...

  • Great burgers and beer!

The Peanut Barrel is a great place to go for either a meal or a drink, although the menu is a bit limited; it's pretty much all burgers. But they're pretty cheap though. A quick scan of the menu and you'll find that everything is less than $7 (for the food at least). For drinks, they are similar to any other bar in the area, offering a variety of...

East Lansing Nightlife

  • Your basic college bar

This is a classic college dive. The floor sticks to your shoes. It smells of stale beer and greasy food, and many people are a little tipsy. The good thing is that it is not as pretentious or douchy as many of the East Lansing bars. You can be yourself here. The service can be a little slow, but to be expected in a college town. A cool place to be...

  • Live music scene in East Lansing

Back in the day, this was THE place for live music. You we're not a real band unless you gigged at Rick's. These days it is split between live music and lame dj's. Oh well, everything changes. It is still a cool place to check out a band though. I like the vibe- The sweat comes off the walls as everybody is crammed together in a basement location....

  • Burgeroma

Thursday is Burgeroma night at the Riv. Pitchers of beer are only $2 and burgers are 1. Just get there before 3:30 or you will be waiting in line. Try to get a booth. Later on in the ngith, when the whole bar joins in on some of the songs playing, sing along or you will stand out.

East Lansing Transportation

  • Parking

By far, the biggest downside to East Lansing is parking. There is literally no where to park during the day in this city. Every single spot is either a meter, in a parking garage, in a "pay to leave" lot, or in a lot that is reserved for passes only (aka, you have to buy a monthly/yearly parking pass to be able to park there). The situation gets a...

  • CATA

CATA is Lansing's bus system. While the portion operating in MSU and between East Lansing and Okemos is fine, the Lansing portion is 50% mentally imparied individuals, many of who are aggressive. Women should be extra careful and never give money to any passanger who solicits it.

East Lansing Shopping

Goodrich's is a grocery store that caters to a large foreign population in the city. It has a huge variety of foreign and specialty foods and is the ideal place to shop if you're tired of eating the same old thing.

What to buy: Wine, deli, cheese, Asian food.

What to pay: A tiny bit more than average grocery store prices.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

East Lansing is the home of Michigan State University and appropriately has the highest Green to Blue ratio in the state. It is not appropriate to wear Blue and Yellow, especially any UofM wear in the city. You can expect discrimination and negetive reactions if you do.

East Lansing Tourist Traps

  • Scalpers and Parking During Games

Tickets to many MSU sporting events are in high demand and well attended. This leads to individuals illegally selling tickets at highly inflated prices near the event. If you must buy tickets from a scalper, only offer up to 50% over the face value of the tickets. They may try to bring you up but refuse and eventually you'll get the ticket at a...

  • There aren't many!

You won't find many tourist traps in East Lansing because most of the tourists are Michigan residents, in town for a conference, to visit children at MSU or alumni of the university who won't put up with "a bad deal." Most recreation opportunities and museums are free or very low price to attract a college age population.

East Lansing What to Pack

  • RedCedar24's Profile Photo

    by RedCedar24 Written Sep 7, 2002

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Dress is very informal in East Lansing with shorts and t-shirts the norm in summer and blue jeans the rest of the year. Blue jeans are even acceptable in fancy restaurants, Warton Center (theatre), and church.

  • Slight correction for MSU dairy store...

Actually the MSU dairy store does not use milk from the MSU dairy farm. For the reason that the farm produces more than the plant can handle at one time. Rather the milk from the farm is sold to the Michigan Milk Producer's plant in Ovid (1/2 hr NE of MSU), and when the dairy plant needs milk, it comes from the plant in Ovid, so while there is a...

  • Experience MSU.

Walk around north campus. On the ancient shady paths of MSU's north campus there are numerous relics of the university's 130+ years as an academic center for the midwest. Canoeing on the Red Cedar River on a quite summer's day with the chimes of Beaumont Tower's clock ringing in the distance.
