Weekends in East Lansing during the school year can get wild, especially if you are near the bars or near the 'student ghetto' late at night. When the bars close, E.L can get really packed, and 50% of the population is male. Of that 50%, 90% is totally hammered, and of that 90%, about half of them have a need to assert their hormones.
What this means is that assaults are not uncommon at all, especially late at night on weekends. In 2000, there was a man beaten to death in the middle of downtown for no apparent reason. E.L isn't that dangerous, but you need to be aware that conflict can happen pretty easily. This is true, regardless of your sex. Girls will get harassed and hooted at, Boys can get physically assaulted for no reason. It's best to travel in groups, though you aren't putting yourself at huge risk if you don't.
Also, the cops in East Lansing are pigs in every sense of the word. They can be very harassing, so it's best to be completely cooperative if you have an encounter with them. Encounters will happen a lot more often than you'd think too. I recall one occasion where I was walking home from the store around 2 AM with an unopened case of beer, when a cop pulled up in his cruiser and checked my ID. I was walking by myself, minding my own business, etc. Use your judgement and don't be stupid and you'll stay out of trouble. Leave a Comment

After 1 a.m. especially after the bars close at 2 a.m., Grand River Ave. and the streets along it can because dangerous due to drunk and agressive guys. Avoid these guys and if confronted, smile and head the other way. Leave a Comment

East Lansing and Michigan State University (DPS) police are often there to help you only if you are over 25. Expect harassment if you are younger, especially if you are carrying or have consumed alcohol. Never drink and drive regardless of age. Don't even think about carrying illegal narcotics in East Lansing, especially cocaine as the authorities will be unmerciful and Michigan law is very strict. Leave a Comment
