Grand Rapids is fairly easy to get to by plane. The airport is within the city limits, and is fairly well served by 8 different airlines, including connecting & direct flights by just about all of the majors...

Security at the airport is tight for a smallish airport - there's a guard as you drive up to the terminal building that checks every car, and the security is always on patrol. Parking is cheap, and there's the usual array of rental car companies waiting to ring up your credit card.

Surprisingly, the airport is named in honor of former president G.R. Ford. It really is surprising when you consider that most of the landmarks in this city carry the name Meijer. :-)

  • There are several ways of getting to GR. If you want to fly, Gerald R. Ford International is located at the end of 44th Street and is well-serviced by many major airlines. The Pere Marquette runs daily between Grand Rapids and Chicago, and Greyhound goes to several locales in the region as well. Unless you're visiting relatives you should probably drive as West Michigan is very car-oriented.
Although the GRATA busing system runs fairly efficiently, it doesn't service the entire metro area. It's usable, but a pain. Unless you plan on staying within the city limits (and why would you want to do that?) you're much better off driving your own car.

  • You will want a car when you are here if you are going anywhere outside of the downtown area.

What the hell is a Michigan Left?
    joits

  • This was very confusing the first time I heard it. A michigan left... uh... how are the lefts here different than any other left I asked? Well, when you're on a main road like Beltline Ave, there are several intersections where you cannot make a left. In order to make the left... you have to pass that intersection and then make a u-turn to go back to that street where you will make a right. It seems like its kinda of silly... but considering that there isn't as much traffic here as where I'm from, it makes sense. They don't want to slow down the traffic on the main roads by having the lights turn red so that people can turn left onto another street. By making use of the Michigan lefts, they can keep traffic on the main roads flowing smoothly and those who have to make lefts can do the Michigan left.

This is definitely the # 1 sculpture to see in the gardens. It is 24 feet high. You can get some perspective if you look down by the left front foot of the horse where my husband is standing. Quite a magnificent sight!
This horse was sculptured from Leonardo DaVinci's sketch.

This 1880's farmhouse was built to 3/4 scale of Lena Rader Meijer's childhood home.
The Michigan farm display is reminiscent of a 1930's family farm. The wrap-around front porch has rocking chairs to sit and rest and to escape the summer heat. Even though there is no entry to the house, near the porch there are toilets and drinking fountains.

The barn was moved from its original site and received the "2005 Barn Award" of the year. Around the outside of the barn are different sculptures of animals in their pens.
A great way to see the animals and not have to keep up their care or bother with their smell.

This is quite similar to the inside of the barn we had on our farm in Michigan. It is a little smaller, perhaps to match the 3/4 scale of the farmhouse. On the side beams many farm implements and tools are displayed.
I can't really remember my father doing this but it seems a natural place to store tools.
Most barns in Michigan have a double wide opening at the top floor and they are open to the bottom part on the opposite side for the cows to come in and out for milking.

I enjoyed walking around looking at the different small buildings on the farm at Meijer gardens. I remembered the milkhouse my father had and the big milkcans. I still have one for a remembrance.

We also had a smokehouse made from brick and a chicken house, a pig sty and a huge wooden carriage barn. There was also a corn crib, a silo of course and for folks who lived there in the "olden days" an outhouse.
A three holer if I remember correctly.
This farmhouse at the gardens had all of the things we had.

At the front of the entrance there is a sculpture of a full size bear. The garden is five acres and one of the largest gardens for children in the nation. It is open year round and is totally wheelchair accessible.
The garden focuses on gardennig, wildlife and nature found in the Great Lakes area.
There are ten themed areas; including a log cabin, a story-telling area, a Rock Quarry containing living fossils and more.
